Abstract

Background and Study Aim. The consumption of nitrate has been linked to various advantages, including aiding recovery by lessening fatigue, enhancing oxygen supply to muscles, and increasing the elimination of metabolic by-products during intense physical activity. Given the rising trend of utilizing dietary supplements for peak athletic performance, this literature review aims to explore the role and promise of nitrate supplementation in influencing muscle function and boosting physical prowess, while also shedding light on its potential perks and drawbacks.Material and Methods. Electronic databases including Web of Science (all databases), PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, Science Direct, were explored on June 11, 2022. The search terms were drawn from prior systematic reviews on nitrate supplementation and exercise and informed by a recent narrative review on Nitrates impact on athletic performance and muscle hypertrophy.Results. The findings of this review indicate that nitrate intake, owing to its ability to widen blood vessels, could potentially enhance blood flow and oxygen delivery to muscles during exercise. Consequently, this improved circulation might facilitate better nutrient and oxygen transportation to muscle tissue, thereby fostering muscle development through enhanced nutrient absorption and waste removal during physical exertion. However, it's crucial to note that excessive nitrate consumption might trigger adverse effects related to the formation of nitrosamines.Conclusion. In summary, investigations into the potential advantages of nitrate supplementation, whether through dietary sources or supplements, in augmenting athletic performance are promising. This is evident from the observed effects of increased muscle protein synthesis, reduced muscle soreness, and enhanced cognitive function under stressful conditions. Nonetheless, it's imperative to exercise caution against over-supplementation due to the potential risks of toxicity and associated side effects.

Abstract

Background and Study Aim. Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) have received considerable attention in sports science due to their potential benefits in improving athletic performance and promoting muscle recovery. BCAAs including leucine, isoleucine, and valine, are essential amino acids that are important for muscle protein physiology. To date, studies have shown positive effects of BCAAs supplementation on muscle recovery, muscle soreness, and cognitive function. Hence, with the growing popularity of using dietary supplements for optimal athletic performance, this narrative literature review aims to investigate the role and potential of BCAAs supplementation to influence muscle function and improve physical performance, while highlighting the potential benefits and side effects associated with their supplementation.Material and Methods. The current review was conducted according to PRISMA (Preferred reporting items for systematic review and meta-analysis) guidelines. Electronic databases including Web of Science (all databases), PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, Science Direct, were explored on June 11, 2022.Results. Based on recent evidence, BCAAs have been shown to reduce muscle damage, improve muscle recovery and repair, increase muscle protein synthesis, and maintain muscle mass during periods of energy restriction, however may also have some potential side effects such as liver damage, kidney dysfunction and negative effects on glucose metabolism.Conclusion. In conclusion, studies investigating the potential benefits of BCAAs obtained from supplementation and diet to improve athletic performance are promising due to their demonstrated effects in increasing muscle protein synthesis, reducing muscle soreness, and improving cognitive function under stress. Nevertheless, excessive supplementation should be avoided due to the potential risk of toxicity and side effects.

Abstract

Background and Study Aim. Physical fitness is a very important factor for students to fight fatigue when doing activities, so that during the learning process at school students can still concentrate on learning. Information on physical fitness in elementary school students is a source of health that really needs to be considered. Therefore, this study aimed to review the scientific literature on physical fitness of primary school children through learning with traditional games in Indonesia.Material and Methods. The search in this study used databases such as ScienceDirect, Scopus, Google Scholar, and PubMed. The search began using the ScienceDirect database, then Scopus, Google Scholar and PubMed. The search strategy included a combination of keyword variations ("traditional games" OR "Play Model" AND "physical fitness" AND "students" AND "elementary school"). The search was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. After following the exclusion criteria, only 6 articles remained.Results. The results showed that the provision of traditional games can improve students' physical fitness. Traditional games are developed with a play approach and activities are designed according to the basic movement skills possessed or are in their developmental stage. Traditional games have values and elements of movement that are in accordance with the need to develop basic skills.Conclusions. This increase occurs because of traditional games that can encourage children to be actively involved in learning, want to do movements and effectively improve physical fitness. That way, in the context of physical learning conceptualized in a traditional game can be applied.

Abstract

Background. The effectiveness of teaching methods in sports education has always been a key area of interest for improving athlete performance. One such method, the play method, is gaining attention for its potential to enhance physical skills while maintaining engagement and enjoyment.Objectives. This study explores the impact of the play method on improving shooting ability among female basketball athletes.Methods. This study was conducted on 37 female participants from a local basketball team, using a pretest-posttest design to assess changes in shooting performance. The tools in this study collected data directly from tests and measurements conducted on the basketball court. Students in this study practiced the basic technique (shooting at the basketball hoop) for 1 minute, which was repeated three times to achieve the best results. SPSS Version 26 was used to help analyze the data in this study.Results. The results revealed a significant improvement, with the mean pretest shooting score of 72.81 rising to 81.64 in the posttest, representing an 8.83-point increase. Statistical analysis confirmed that the data followed a normal distribution, and the play method had a statistically significant effect on shooting ability (p < 0.05). The findings highlight the value of integrating play-based techniques into sports training, particularly in youth and amateur sports settings. Conclusion. This study contributes to the existing body of research by demonstrating that the play method is not only effective in enhancing fundamental skills, such as shooting, but also provides an enjoyable and interactive approach to learning. By offering an alternative to traditional drills, the play method fosters motivation, improves skill acquisition, and can make sports education more accessible and enjoyable for athletes.
