Abstract

Optimal sleep quality is very important for the health and academic performance of medical students. However, high academic demands often cause lack of sleep and sleep disorders. Exercise has been shown to have a positive effect on sleep quality in the general population, but research on the role of exercise on sleep quality in medical students is still limited. This study aims to identify the relationship between the level of physical activity (exercise) and sleep quality among medical students in Jakarta. This cross-sectional observational study involved 350 medical students from various universities in Jakarta. Physical activity data was collected using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), while sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Logistic regression analysis was used to identify the relationship between physical activity and sleep quality, by controlling for confounding variables such as age, gender and stress level. The results showed that medical students who were physically active had a lower risk of experiencing sleep disorders compared to students who were less active. Logistic regression analysis showed that moderate to vigorous physical activity was significantly associated with better sleep quality (OR = 0.56; 95% CI: 0.35-0.88; p = 0.012). Exercise has an important role in improving sleep quality in medical students. Exercise-based interventions may be an effective strategy to address sleep problems in this population.

Abstract

Monitoring nutritional status and waist circumference is an important step in detecting potential obesity and preventing cardiometabolic complications. Educational programs about the importance of monitoring nutritional status and waist circumference are crucial for the community, especially among young adults at high risk. The FK UNTAR community service team conducted a screening program for measuring nutritional status and waist circumference. This activity aims to educate and raise awareness about the importance of monitoring nutritional status and waist circumference as an early detection method for obesity prevention. The community service activity related to nutritional status checks and waist circumference measurements was held on October 9, 2024 and attended by 23 instructors from Atisa Dipamkara. The process began with measuring weight, height, and calculating the Body Mass Index (BMI), which is the main indicator in assessing nutritional status. Most participants were an average age of 37.96 years, with the majority falling within the normal or higher nutritional status category. 69.6% of respondents were at risk of abdominal obesity, which increases the risk of metabolic diseases. The average BMI of the participants was 25.47 kg/m², indicating a tendency toward obesity. The follow-up plan for this activity includes education on healthy eating patterns, physical activity, stress management, and regular check-ups every 3-6 months to monitor health.

Abstract

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have become the leading cause of death in Indonesia, particularly among young adults, with an increasing incidence rate. Technological advancements, lifestyle changes, and environmental factors have contributed to the rising prevalence of NCDs, especially among the younger generation. In light of this, it is essential to implement prevention through health screening and education on healthy lifestyles, particularly among young adults. This community service activity was conducted on December 20 and 21, 2024, with the aim of raising awareness among young adults in West Jakarta about the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle through health screenings and the promotion of an active lifestyle, including education on nutrition status, physical activity, quality sleep, and the dangers of smoking, especially the use of e-cigarettes. The results of the activity showed that the majority of participants experienced sleep difficulties, and most did not smoke, although some used e-cigarettes. The results of nutrition status measurements also indicated that most participants fell into the obese category. Participants' physical activity levels were relatively low, with many engaging in less than 30 minutes of exercise per session and struggling to find time for regular physical activity. Education and promotion of healthy lifestyles need to be continuously improved to prevent NCDs among young adults, with a focus on improving eating habits, increasing physical activity, and managing stress.
