Abstract

Introduction: Coffee is a popular drink among adolescents. However, its effect on cardiovascular performance in this population remains unclear. This study aims to analyze the relationship between coffee consumption and cardiovascular performance in adolescents in Jakarta, Indonesia. Methods: Cross-sectional observational research was conducted on 350 adolescents aged 15-18 years in Jakarta. Coffee consumption data was collected through a structured questionnaire, while cardiovascular performance was assessed through measurements of blood pressure, heart rate and body mass index (BMI). Logistic regression analysis was used to identify the association between coffee consumption and cardiovascular performance, with adjustment for potential confounding factors. Results: The results of this study provide evidence that excessive coffee consumption (>2 cups/day) can increase blood pressure and resting heart rate in adolescents. However, moderate coffee consumption (1-2 cups/day) does not appear to have a significant negative impact on cardiovascular performance. Conclusion: Excessive coffee consumption (>2 cups/day) has a significant negative impact on adolescents' cardiovascular performance, namely increasing blood pressure and resting heart rate. However, further research is needed to understand the long-term effects and mechanisms underlying this relationship.

Abstract

Monitoring nutritional status and waist circumference is an important step in detecting potential obesity and preventing cardiometabolic complications. Educational programs about the importance of monitoring nutritional status and waist circumference are crucial for the community, especially among young adults at high risk. The FK UNTAR community service team conducted a screening program for measuring nutritional status and waist circumference. This activity aims to educate and raise awareness about the importance of monitoring nutritional status and waist circumference as an early detection method for obesity prevention. The community service activity related to nutritional status checks and waist circumference measurements was held on October 9, 2024 and attended by 23 instructors from Atisa Dipamkara. The process began with measuring weight, height, and calculating the Body Mass Index (BMI), which is the main indicator in assessing nutritional status. Most participants were an average age of 37.96 years, with the majority falling within the normal or higher nutritional status category. 69.6% of respondents were at risk of abdominal obesity, which increases the risk of metabolic diseases. The average BMI of the participants was 25.47 kg/m², indicating a tendency toward obesity. The follow-up plan for this activity includes education on healthy eating patterns, physical activity, stress management, and regular check-ups every 3-6 months to monitor health.

Abstract

Spirometry is a method for measuring lung capacity and function, playing a crucial role in the early detection of respiratory disorders. Among adolescents, education on respiratory health and spirometry examinations can help prevent respiratory issues that may impact quality of life. The objective of this community service activity was to enhance adolescents' understanding of the importance of maintaining respiratory health and to motivate them to adopt preventive measures. The methods employed included health education focusing on the risks of respiratory disorders and spirometry examinations for early detection. This program utilized the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) framework, encompassing planning, implementation of education and examinations, evaluation, and follow-up to improve the program. The results showed an increase in participants' understanding of risk factors and the benefits of spirometry examinations. Participants became more aware of the importance of maintaining respiratory health through healthy lifestyle practices. Health education and spirometry screening play a vital role in raising awareness and promoting preventive actions among adolescents concerning respiratory health. This activity is expected to serve as a foundation for similar programs focusing on respiratory health in adolescents.

Abstract

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have become the leading cause of death in Indonesia, particularly among young adults, with an increasing incidence rate. Technological advancements, lifestyle changes, and environmental factors have contributed to the rising prevalence of NCDs, especially among the younger generation. In light of this, it is essential to implement prevention through health screening and education on healthy lifestyles, particularly among young adults. This community service activity was conducted on December 20 and 21, 2024, with the aim of raising awareness among young adults in West Jakarta about the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle through health screenings and the promotion of an active lifestyle, including education on nutrition status, physical activity, quality sleep, and the dangers of smoking, especially the use of e-cigarettes. The results of the activity showed that the majority of participants experienced sleep difficulties, and most did not smoke, although some used e-cigarettes. The results of nutrition status measurements also indicated that most participants fell into the obese category. Participants' physical activity levels were relatively low, with many engaging in less than 30 minutes of exercise per session and struggling to find time for regular physical activity. Education and promotion of healthy lifestyles need to be continuously improved to prevent NCDs among young adults, with a focus on improving eating habits, increasing physical activity, and managing stress.
