Abstract

Aging is a gradual physiological change in an organism that results in senescence or a reduction in biological function and the ability of the organism to respond to metabolic stress. Aging occurs in cells, organs, or the entire organism over time; the study of the aging process seeks to understand and regulate all elements that contribute to an individual's life constraints. The predominant acute consequence of UV radiation on normal human skin is sunburn-induced inflammation (erythema). The overall goal of this study is to examine and test the efficacy of applying an anti-aging cream containing lemon peel extract (Citrus limon) in preventing the aging process of mouse skin. Wistar strain (Rattus norvegicus) exposed to ultraviolet-B light. The specific goal of this study is to investigate the efficacy of applying lemon peel extract (Citrus limon) cream at 5%, 10%, and 15% concentrations in preventing the aging process of rat skin exposed to UV-B radiation.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between soft drink consumption and obesity among adolescents. Obesity, a critical public health issue, has shown a rising prevalence globally, including in Indonesia, due to changes in dietary patterns and lifestyle. The research adopts a cross-sectional design conducted at Santo Thomas 1 Private High School in Medan, involving 198 students categorized into obese and non-obese groups based on Body Mass Index (BMI). The findings reveal that frequent soft drink consumption (more than three times a week) significantly increases the risk of obesity (p = 0.0001). Additionally, low physical activity and excessive caloric intake were identified as major contributing factors. Multivariate analysis highlighted low physical activity as the dominant risk factor for obesity, with an odds ratio of 36.351. The study underscores the need for targeted interventions to reduce soft drink consumption and promote healthier lifestyle choices among adolescents to mitigate the adverse effects of obesity on health outcomes.

Abstract

The lack of socialization carried out by Family Planning Field Extension Workers (FPFE) leads to fear among the community, especially among Couples of Reproductive Age (CRA), in choosing Long-Term Contraception Methods (LTCM). Couples of reproductive age require health education or counseling to help them determine which contraceptive method to use. This study aims to determine the role of PLKB for couples of reproductive age (PUS) in choosing LTCM at Sekerak District Health Center, Aceh Tamiang Regency in 2022. This study is a quantitative research with a cross-sectional design. The population in this study was all couples of reproductive age in Sekerak Kanan Village, Sekerak District, Aceh Tamiang Regency, and the research sample consisted of 126 people. Data collection was done directly by distributing questionnaires to couples of reproductive age. Then, it was followed by the process of data analysis using the Chi-Square test and logistic regression. The results showed that there is a relationship between counseling quality in choosing LTCM with a value of (p=0.001; PR=3.4; 95% CI 2.201-5.294), there is a relationship between PLKB barriers in choosing LTCM with a value of (p=0.001; PR=2.2; 95% CI 1.724-3.007), and there is a relationship between FPFE capacity in choosing long-term contraceptive methods with a value of (p=0.001; PR=2.4; 95% CI 1.704-3.472). Furthermore, the dominant factor related to the selection of LTCM is counseling quality with a value of (p=0.000; PR=10.766 95% CI 3.491-33.204). Couples of reproductive age are expected to increase their knowledge, especially about long-term contraceptive methods, and it is hoped that men will not be ashamed to participate in family planning programs.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a critical global health issue, characterized by high morbidity and mortality rates associated with various complications. In Indonesia, the incidence is projected to reach 28.6 million by 2045, positioning the country among the highest globally. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of barley as a food ingredient on blood sugar levels and pancreatic histopathology. The study involved dividing the mice into six groups, with six mice in each group. These groups were: normal control (K), negative control (KN) induced with alloxan 125 mg/kg BW intraperitoneally, positive control (KP) with oral metformin 9 mg/200 g BW, normal barley rats (P1), DM barley rats (P2), and DM rats with mixed food (P3). Phytochemical screening was also conducted on barley porridge to identify the presence of flavonoids, glycosides, alkaloids, and saponins. The KP and P2 groups were more effective in reducing blood sugar levels than the KN and P3 groups. In the Kruskal-Wallis test, there was no significant difference between groups P2 and KP on postprandial blood sugar levels, indicating that barley produced an effect similar to metformin (p-value = 0.0395). Pancreatic histopathology observations showed that groups P2, P3, and KP had the same damage score of 2. Barley demonstrated a comparable antidiabetic effect to metformin, as evidenced by similar results in blood sugar reduction and pancreatic histopathology scores in the P2 and KP groups

Abstract

Indonesia as a developing country has many health problems, one of these problems is stunting. According to WHO, stunting is a condition where a child's z-score is less than -2 SD/standard deviation as measured on the WHO growth curve. Many factors cause toddlers to experience stunting, such as poor nutritional status during the mother's pregnancy, parenting patterns, and exclusive breastfeeding. Exclusive breastfeeding is the initial food for babies because it contains essential nutrients for immunity so that babies do not get infected easily. In North Sumatra, the stunting incidence rate is 21.1%, especially in Simalungun Regency, the stunting incidence rate is 17.4%. Seeing the conditions that occurred, interest arose in conducting research in the Simalungun Regency area, specifically in the Panombean Panei area. This research uses observational analytical methods with a cross sectional study research design. The sampling technique used in this research was total sampling with a total of 50 toddlers who met the criteria. The assessment of exclusive breastfeeding was carried out by completing a questionnaire by mothers of toddlers. The statistical test used is Chi-Square. The research results showed that 29 (58%) toddlers were given breast milk non-exclusively, so there were 21 (42%) stunted toddlers and 8 (16%) normal toddlers. There are 21 (42%) toddlers who receive exclusive breast milk, of which 9 (18%) toddlers are stunted and 12 (24%) toddlers are normal. The results of the analysis show a p-value = 0.035, which means there is a relationship between exclusive breastfeeding and the incidence of stunting. The conclusion of this research is that there is a relationship between exclusive breastfeeding and the incidence of stunting in toddlers aged 24-60 months at the Panombean Panei Health Center.

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus often leads to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, affecting 69-74% of patients. Barley (Hordeum vulgare) offers a potential therapeutic alternative with safer interventions. This study aimed to explore the effects of barley on liver histopathology in alloxan-induced male Wistar rats and compare it with metformin. The research was conducted using a laboratory experimental design with 36 male Wistar rats divided into six groups: normal control, negative control (alloxan induction without treatment), positive control (metformin), and three treatment groups with variations in barley administration. Treatment group 1 received barley before and after alloxan induction, treatment group 2 received barley and standard feed after alloxan induction, and treatment group 3 received standard feed mixed with barley after alloxan induction. Barley was administered for 28 days, and histopathological analysis was performed at the end of the study. Data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests. The results showed that barley was able to improve liver cell damage, although not as effectively as metformin. The positive control group with metformin showed an average liver damage score of 148,33 with 53,03% normal cells and 15,28% necrotic cells. In contrast, the barley treatment groups showed average liver damage scores of 169,67 and 159,67. Thus, barley can improve liver histopathology in alloxan-induced rats, highlighting its potential as a safe herbal therapy for preventing and managing liver damage caused by oxidative stress in diabetes mellitus.
