Abstract

Presidential elections are often accompanied by various phenomena, including hate crimes that persist even after the elections have concluded. This phenomenon has not yet been thoroughly studied through social media analysis. In response to the gaps in previous research, this study focuses on sentiment analysis on social media, the forms of hate crime, and their contributing factors. The study presents three key findings related to hate crimes following the 2024 presidential election in Indonesia. First, Ganjar Pranowo received the least negative sentiment, followed by Anies Baswedan and Prabowo Subianto. Second, hate crimes directed at presidential candidates took the form of ethnic-based sentiment, anti-religion hatred, and threats of violence. Third, factors influencing the emergence of hate crimes post-election include the influence of social media popularity, sponsorship by electoral actors, weak enforcement of campaign violations, and the history of political and ethno communal violence. The study also emphasizes the need for future research to examine post-election hate crimes by integrating multidisciplinary approaches on social media. This would enrich the data and provide more comprehensive knowledge about hate crime phenomena and other forms of digital crime arising from the electoral process.

Abstract

This article critically examines the phenomenon of community vigilantism against criminals because these actions are often legitimised by dominant cultural knowledge and meanings. However, this phenomenon tends to be absent from the literature. In addition to responding to the gaps in previous studies, this research also aims to explain the characteristics, factors, and implications of community vigilantism against criminals. This research is based on descriptive qualitative research using a case study approach. The important findings of this study show that the vigilante violence perpetrated by the community against criminals appears in the form of physical and psychological violence, as well as acts of property destruction. These acts are not only influenced by factors such as mass hysteria, disregard for moral standards, and low social cohesion but also have long implications for counterproductive social conditions. This study contributes significantly to evaluating the normalisation of vigilante violence acts against criminals in public spaces while proposing strategies to prevent the adverse effects of vigilante violence acts on social harmony.

Abstract

Deradicalizing high-risk terrorism inmates is a multifaceted and paradoxical challenge that has not been comprehensively addressed in criminological studies. This research seeks to fill the gaps in previous studies by focusing on the security challenges, personnel difficulties, and prison culture dynamics within super-maximum security facilities in their efforts to deradicalize terrorism inmates. The findings highlight three critical aspects of this complexity. First, the security measures in super-maximum security facilities emphasize the strict implementation of a one-inmate-per-cell system, which minimizes inmate interactions, adheres to high-security standards, and utilizes advanced technological systems. Second, correctional officers face significant challenges, including verbal confrontations from inmates, the harsh environmental conditions of Nusakambangan Island, the need for strong mental resilience, limited human resources, and constraints in the execution of interagency programs for deradicalization. Third, the prison culture of terrorism inmates in Nusakambangan’s super-maximum security facilities is characterized by radicalism dissemination patterns, inmate categorization, deterrent experiences, recidivism in radical behavior, and the daily habits of inmates within their cells. This study highlights the importance of future research that evaluates and compares deradicalization processes across various correctional facilities in Indonesia, with the goal of developing a more comprehensive understanding of this critical issue.

Abstract

The problem of counterterrorism in Indonesia continues to evolve, including institutional challenges and coordination effectiveness, terrorism funding, implementation of deradicalization efforts, and the political dimension of terrorism. It is important to discuss this phenomenon through a criminological approach that emphasizes the sociological paradigm. Previous studies have limitations in explaining social construction, institutional challenges, and offering Peacemaking Criminology approach in a more comprehensive and efficient counterterrorism effort in Indonesia. This research was conducted using a qualitative approach through thematic analysis of literature review on 57 previous studies. This research found four important findings. First, there are limited preventive detention clauses and communal or sectarian violence in Indonesia. Second, terrorism financing comes in various forms, poor coordination, and no comprehensive approach involving relevant stakeholders. Third, the complexity of efforts to deradicalize terrorism prisoners in correctional institutions. Fourth, the uncertainty in determining the status of terrorism due to political considerations. Peacemaking Criminology approach in this research offers a new solution to counter terrorism in Indonesia by targeting the root of radicalization through emancipative community development and discussing institutional challenges and ways to overcome them.
