Abstract

This study mapped the contemporary research landscape surrounding “oral traditions as a fount of ethnomathematics knowledge” through a bibliometric analysis employed as a methodological procedure. The main problem addressed in this study is the lack of a comprehensive consideration of evolving research trends and intellectual structure within ethnomathematics, i.e., the role of oral traditions as a source of knowledge. Oral traditions, defined as the cultural knowledge, art, ideas, and practices transmitted verbally across generations, offer a rich repository of ethnomathematical insights. 713 publications were identified from the Dimensions database between 2014 and 2024. This bibliometric analysis focused on identifying key research themes, authors, publishers, keywords, or key terms distributions within the corpus of extracted publications, as well as temporal trends in publication activity and citation patterns. The findings revealed a growing interest in the field, focusing on (a) educational context, (b) cultural studies, and (c) the intersection of mathematics and language. The analysis also identified key research themes, such as (a) the role of language and culture in shaping mathematical thought, (b) the development of ethnomathematical practices, and (c) the pedagogical implications of incorporating ethnomathematics into formal education. Additionally, 11 influential scholars who are driving the field forward were identified. According to the term distribution analysis, of the 6,092 terms, 316 met the threshold (minimum number of occurrences of the term: 6). For each 316 terms, a relevance score has been calculated. Based on this score, the most relevant terms have been selected. The VOSviewer’s default setting (60% of the most relevant terms) resulted in selecting 190 terms. Based on the given criteria, there is a result of 5 distinctive clusters related to the query that emerged. This study provides theoretical insights into the conceptual foundations of ethnomathematics derived from oral traditions and empirical evidence for informing future research directions and pedagogical practices in mathematics education.

Abstract

Political speech plays a crucial role in shaping public perception, influencing emotions, and constructing ideological narratives. This study employs a scientometric approach to analyze research trends on figurative language in political discourse over the past decade (2014–2024). Using bibliometric data from the Scopus database, we examined 870 journal articles to identify key themes, publication trends, and dominant research clusters. Findings indicate significant growth in the field, particularly from 2018 onward, reflecting increased scholarly interest in political rhetoric. Social Media and Society, Cogent Arts & Humanities, and Theory and Practice in Language Studies emerged as leading publication venues. Thematic analysis revealed four major research clusters: (1) Language and Rhetoric, focusing on metaphor, framing, and discourse strategies; (2) Politician Identity, covering leadership, charisma, and political messaging; (3) Political Discourse, highlighting ideology, persuasion, and propaganda; and (4) Political Events, examining how figurative language is used during elections, crises, and debates. While this study provides a macro-level overview of research on figurative language in politics, it also highlights gaps in qualitative analysis. Future research should integrate rhetorical criticism with scientometric approaches to provide deeper insights into how figurative language influences political engagement. Additionally, expanding the dataset to include diverse linguistic and cultural perspectives would enhance the understanding of global rhetorical strategies. By mapping this field, the study contributes to a more comprehensive knowledge of how language and power interact in political communication.

Abstract

This study delves into the use of satirical comments and political humor in TikTok videos in Indonesia, utilizing a critical discourse analysis (CDA) framework. The study aims to investigate how political issues and figures are depicted through satirical comments in society of the digital natives. The analysis focused on TikTok users’ linguistic and discursive strategies to criticize and satirize political events, figures, and policies. The study used a collection of TikTok videos. It employed a multi-modal approach, analyzing the textual content and visual and audio elements contributing to humor and satire. A qualitative methodology combining content analysis with discourse analysis techniques was used to identify recurring themes, rhetorical devices, and humor patterns in the satirical comments. Specifically, the application of CDA facilitated the deconstruction of power dynamics embedded within the satirical discourse, revealing how TikTok users leverage humor to challenge dominant political narratives. The findings revealed that TikTok users used linguistic devices such as irony, sarcasm, parody, and wordplay to convey their satirical messages. The satirical comments often targeted political figures, policies, and events, focusing on corruption, governance, and social inequality issues. Through humor, TikTok users expressed their dissent and critique of the political system while also participating in creating an alternative public sphere for political discourse. However, the study noted that these satirical comments could be controversial, as they may perpetuate stereotypes or reinforce existing political biases.

Abstract

This study sought to describe education-related conversations or talks of education (TE) from a systemic functional linguistics (SFL) perspective, focusing on how textual themes were deployed by speakers. TEDx talk, a reliable online source, was chosen as the source for the data used to support this study. The analysis’s validated data was the transcription of an education-related speech. Documentation, transcription, and in-depth textual fragmentation were the three primary techniques utilized during data processing and analysis. This study demonstrates, based on its findings, that the textual theme was not utilized in all portions of speech; it was the type of theme for which the speaker was required to provide further information. Despite the limitations of performance, a particular construction and functionalization have been applied to the textual theme. There were phrasal and clausal formulations of textual themes, as well as their role within multiple themes
