Abstract

This study examines the morphosemantic features of Indonesian light verb constructions (LVCs) that utilize the light verb memenuhi. LVCs are a common linguistic feature in Indonesian, consisting of a light verb and a noun that gives the construction a specific meaning. Using a corpus-based approach, this study analyzed LVCs with memenuhi from the Indonesian - Leipzig Corpora Collection (ILCC). This analysis focused on the semantic and syntactic properties of these constructions. The findings indicate that memenuhi is crucial in assigning specific meanings to LVCs. This study identified, at least, four semantic patterns: (1) /memenuhi/ + noun denoting ‘requirements’ or ‘expectations’, (2) /memenuhi/ + noun denoting ‘goals’ or ‘objectives’, (3) /memenuhi/ + noun denoting ‘obligations’ or ‘duties’, and (4) /memenuhi/ + noun denoting ‘situations’ or ‘encounters’. The first semantic pattern can occur in constructions such as /memenuhi kriteria/ ‘meet a criterion’ (-occurrence: 89.100). The second semantic pattern can occur in constructions such as /memenuhi target/ ‘meet a target’ (-occurrence: 47.931). The third semantic pattern can also occur in constructions such as /memenuhi janji/ ‘fulfill a promise’ (-occurrence: 8.238). Lastly, the fourth semantic pattern can occur in constructions such as /memenuhi panggilan/ ‘answer the call’ (-occurrence: 69.672). Syntactically, LVCs with memenuhi exhibit a range of structures, including transitive, intransitive, and ditransitive constructions. Among these three structures, there are at least three thematic relationships that can be found, namely agent, patient, and beneficiary. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the role of light verbs in shaping the meaning of LVCs in Indonesian.

Abstract

Light verb constructions (LVCs) are combinations of a verb and a noun that operate as a referee for a distinctive idiomatic-like meaning in which the noun is the central focus of meaning deduction. This study aimed to identify and describe Indonesian LVCs as morphosemantic phenomena. The dataset comprises Indonesian sentences containing featured LVCs. Three corpora were utilized as data sources: Leipzig Corpora Collection – Indonesian (LCCI), SEAlang Library Indonesian Text Corpus (SEAlang), and Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI). In this study, a framework from Morphosemantics has been employed to provide the deep analysis technique. The results revealed the following two folds. First, at the morphological level, the Indonesian verb membuat 'make' is a clear indicator of the existence of LVCs. Second, on a semantic level, the verb membuat ‘make’ in Indonesian LVCs tends to produce ACTION type verbs, AGENT paired argument of verbs and RESULTATIVE grammatical meaning. This study suggested that further research be done on the morphosyntactic features of the Indonesian LVCs verb membuat 'make.'

Abstract

In the contemporary landscape of language education, the integration of technology and data-driven approaches has emerged as a significant catalyst for pedagogical innovation. This study investigates contemporary trends and trajectories in corpus-driven language learning (CDLL) through a scientometric analysis of 1,118 journal articles indexed in Scopus from 2014 to 2024. This study selected articles that substantively explored CDLL principles and applications using empirical methodologies, excluding those lacking direct CDLL focus or empirical data to capture the most recent decade of research. Employing bibliometric analysis and keywords co-occurrence visualization with VOSviewer, the study identified key themes, prominent actors, and emerging patterns in CDLL research, aiming to inform pedagogical innovation within the Indonesian context. Results revealed a significant growth in CDLL publications, with research concentrated in China, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Keyword analysis identified four distinct thematic clusters: (1) computational linguistics and artificial intelligence (37%), highlighting the integration of deep learning, language modeling, and machine translation in language learning; (2) specialized applications of CDLL (22%), particularly in information management; (3) human-centered language learning (21.5%), emphasizing social interaction, cognitive processes, and technology integration; and (4) foundational principles of CDLL (19.5%), encompassing corpus linguistics, language acquisition, and pedagogical practices. These findings underscore the growing prominence of CDLL in language education and its potential to transform pedagogical practices in Indonesia by leveraging technology, promoting learner autonomy, and integrating authentic language data into diverse learning contexts.

Abstract

The Indonesian language has a unique grammatical construction for verbs, which is the product of a derivational process that results in a deadjectival verb (VDaj). These VDaj constructions are morphologically marked by the affix {ber-}. This affix is commonly utilized in the Indonesian language and can be found, for instance, in the form of {berberat hati}, {berbulat hati}, and {berputih hati}. A recent study aimed to identify and describe the affix {ber-} use in VDaj construction as a phenomenon of morphosemantics. The study utilized data in Indonesian sentences in which the affix {ber-} of VDaj had been structured as one of its constituents. The data sources for this study were the Indonesian-Leipzig Corpora Collection (ILCC) and Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI), and the data was obtained using the technique of textual documentation. The study analysis was done using the immediate defragmentation technique and referential comparison of meaning in the light of Derivational Morphology and Derivational Semantics. The analysis resulted in two main findings. First, the study found that the morphosemantic features of affix {ber-} could be construed to some extent if the affix had been distributed with one of the adjectival types. Second, the study identified at least three specific features of the affix in the VDaj of bI: (a) to form the VDaj in the type of STATE VERB, (b) to incorporate the semantic role of BENEFACTIVE in the argument of VDaj, and (c) in a narrow condition to create the RECIPROCAL meaning of VDaj. Overall, this study sheds light on the unique characteristics of the Indonesian language and provides valuable insights into the morphosemantic features of the affix {ber-} in VDaj construction.
