Abstract

This paper probes into the multifaceted issues surrounding violence against women and challenges to girls' education in Liberia. Coomaraswamy's 2002 research underscored the role of cultural behaviors in family structures contributing significantly to violence against women. King and Winthrop's 2015 study explored factors such as poverty, gender norms, and cultural expectations, contributing to discussions on fair educational opportunities. Cunningham et al.'s 2023 research delved into gender disparities across economic, educational, healthcare, and political spheres, employing a women's empowerment perspective. Theoretical frameworks rooted in gender and social norm theories were employed to understand the impact of cultural identity on preschool girls' education in Liberia. The study focused on evaluating negative effects on preschool girls in Bong, Lofa, and Nimba counties, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to create a supportive environment. Coomaraswamy's 2002 insistence on rejecting the use of cultural considerations to justify violence against girls resonates globally. The study also highlighted disparities in girls' primary school enrollment rates in the region compared to the global average, emphasizing the urgency of addressing educational inequalities. Overall, this paper contributes valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and communities, advocating for positive change in Liberia's educational landscape and women's empowerment.

Abstract

This investigation examined the difficulties encountered by graduate students at Liberian universities during the thesis writing process. It emphasized various barriers: academic, financial, and support-related challenges. For instance, limited access to research resources posed significant hurdles, however financial constraints and a lack of adequate mentorship—due to a high faculty-to-student ratio—also played crucial roles. Although the study delved into strategies for overcoming these obstacles, such as time management techniques and online collaborative tools, it revealed that many students struggled to implement these methods effectively. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach which combined quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews, the research offered a thorough understanding of these impediments. Furthermore, it proposed actionable recommendations—like improved access to libraries and digital resources, enhanced mentorship programs, and workshops focused on time management and research skills—to bolster thesis support systems thus promoting overall academic success for graduate students in Liberia.

Abstract

Early Childhood Education (ECE) faces global challenges in providing a universally comprehensive curriculum, potentially leading to developmental deficiencies in young learners. Past studies in Montserrado County, Liberia, highlighted gaps in cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development due to the absence of a structured and holistic curriculum. This research aimed to develop and implement a comprehensive curriculum emphasizing play-based learning strategies, considering local educational practices and cultural dynamics. Drawing from Dewey's educational philosophy, the study focused on transformative, child-centered approaches. Through purposive sampling and qualitative analysis, the study examined engagement levels, cognitive outcomes, socio-economic factors, community perceptions, implementation challenges, and recommendations. Findings revealed positive engagement in play-based learning, though resource disparities existed. Cognitive gains were noted, with socio-economic backgrounds influencing outcomes. Community support was strong but with reservations. Implementation challenges included resource constraints and teacher comfort levels. Recommendations emphasized continuous professional development and strategic resource allocation. Overall, the study highlights the potential of play-based learning to enhance early childhood education, offering insights for Montserrado County and broader implications for similar contexts globally.

Abstract

Solving math problems through writing not only deepens their understanding of mathematics but also strengthens their communication skills about mathematics and learning vocabulary in mathematics lessons, because writing means they can explain what they have done and why the strategy works. Mathematics learning should provide space and opportunities for children to ask questions, by formulating their own questions from given mathematical situations or related to material in mathematics. This can be accommodated by learning using the Problem Posing approach. This research aims to discuss the relationship between writing in mathematics and the problem posing approach. This type of research is qualitative descriptive research with a literature study method. Data was collected through related journals for study. The research results show that learning activities must be able to develop various students' mathematical abilities. Based on the explanation given, one alternative learning strategy that can develop students' mathematical abilities is the Writing in Learning Mathematics strategy and learning by problem posing.
