Abstract

Through an analytical study of Abu Ubaidah's speech in a war situation between Hamas-Israel, this qualitative descriptive research explores the elements of Geoffrey Leech's politeness maxims and Dell Hymes' speech events in a war situation. Speech analysis consists of looking for aspects of politeness in the form of maxims of wisdom, maxims of generosity, maxims of praise, maxims of humility, maxims of agreement, and maxims of sympathy. This research found three maxims used in Abu Ubaidah's speech, namely the maxims of praise, humility, and sympathy. This can be seen from Abu Ubaidah's speech by showing the application of these three maxims, such as showing respect, recognition, and sympathy for Allah, the fighters, and the Palestinian people. Analysis was also carried out to look for speech events in settings and scenes, participants, and ends in Abu Ubaidah's speech. The theory of Abu Ubaidah's speech events in the Hamas-Israel conflict includes three main factors: setting and scene involve the location and time of the speech amid intensive attacks in Gaza. Participants include Abu Ubaidah, the al-Qassam Brigades, the Palestinian community, the enemy, and the international community. And ends, which include several main objectives depending on the context of the intended speech partner.

Abstract

This study examines the Arabic reading ability of eighth-grade students at MTs Miftahul Khair Hartaco. This research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative descriptive analysis. The instruments used include observation, questionnaires, and interviews. The evaluation was carried out through pronunciation and sentence tests, and factors that cause problems in learning Arabic were identified.  The results indicate that students’ hijaiyyah letter pronunciation in the vocabulary test was at a moderate level (61.90%), whereas their pronunciation in conversational sentences was significantly weaker (42.25%). Overall, their Arabic pronunciation ability was categorized as deficient, with an average score of 53.56%. The study identifies internal factors such as low student interest and motivation, while external challenges include limited learning resources and a lack of varied teaching methods.  This study concludes that improving Arabic reading skills requires a holistic approach that addresses both internal and external factors. Recommendations include developing innovative teaching strategies, integrating technology in learning, and enhancing instructional materials to foster better engagement and reading proficiency.

Abstract

This study examines the integration of 21st-century skills in the Grade IX Arabic as a Foreign Language (AFL) textbook published by the Directorate of KSKK Madrasah, Directorate General of Islamic Education, Ministry of Religious Affairs of Indonesia. A qualitative descriptive design with an evaluative orientation was employed, focusing on Chapter 1, which covers texts, grammar, and learning tasks. The analysis was guided by the Partnership for 21st Century Learning (P21) framework, encompassing creativity and innovation, critical thinking and problem-solving, communication, and collaboration. Data were interpreted using a Likert scale. The findings indicate that creativity and innovation, as well as critical thinking and problem-solving, fall within the “sufficient” category (65–74), while communication and collaboration are classified as “outstanding” (85–100). These results reveal the textbook’s strength in promoting interaction and teamwork, while also highlighting gaps in fostering higher-order thinking and creativity. The implications underscore the need for a more balanced development of the four skill domains, suggesting that future textbooks should include more varied and challenging activities to promote creative exploration and critical engagement.
