Abstract

Unexpected shift to emergency remote teaching (ERT) engendered a complex situation for all schools around the globe, in particular those with inadequate prior experience of this distant online learning mode. Whilst the bulk of research has dealt with ERT practices in various school contexts, this issue in Indonesian pesantren – a type of Islamic boarding school which provides full-time comprehensive religious educational activities but have considerably lack of practice in distance online learning – remains underexplored. This qualitative study addressed this gap by unpacking English language teachers’ voices and experiences in ERT in pesantren school contexts. The study was conducted during school closure in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and its data were generated through open ended questionnaires and analyzed using six-phase thematic analysis. The findings show that the teachers indicated positive attitude toward ERT. Despite several challenges, they expressed opportunities that might potentially contribute to the better enactment of ERT in pesantren learning process. Pedagogical implications and recommendations for further research are discussed. Keywords: Emergency Remote Teaching, ELT, Pesantren School

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the benefits and negative impacts of using social media (TikTok, YouTube, WhatsApp) as an innovation in Social Science learning in schools and madrasas. This research used a systematic literature review (SLR) type, with a qualitative approach. Research period focused on years (2020-2024). Database was obtained from “Google Scholar” and “ScienceDirect”. Then, we conducted a bibliometric analysis to understand the bibliographic landscape with “VOSviever”. To obtain the credibility of the data as the main finding of 35 article documents, we used the “Publish or Perish”. The findings include: First, the use of social media in learning can create effective learning situations, provide quick access, allow for discussions between teachers and students online. With teacher guidance, social media can enrich the learning experience and increase student engagement in learning. Second, that the use of social media in learning might have negative effects such as internet connection disruptions that affect learning, indications of addiction to negative content, disruption of student’s concentration, reduced direct interaction, and problems such as privacy and security. The integration of digital platforms in learning can increase student motivation, expand access to information, and encourage collaboration. However, there is a need for teacher training on digital literacy to ensure wise use, and reduce the risk of spreading irrelevant information. This research encourages the curriculum development that accommodates the planned use of social media, so that students not only become consumers of information, but also creators of critical and creative content.

Abstract

Abstract. In the dynamic landscape of language education, understanding the perspectives of educators within unique cultural and educational contexts becomes imperative for fostering effective learning environments. This qualitative study explores the perceptions and challenges faced by English language teachers in pesantren schools in Indonesia, where cultural, religious, and linguistic dimensions intricately influence language education. Through in-depth interviews, the research uncovers the complexities teachers navigate in balancing cultural preservation with the imperative of equipping students with English language skills. Findings highlight how English language teachers navigated the integration of ELT practices with students’ context and needs, primarily aiming to convey the importance of learning English, aligning it with Islamic teachings and dispelling misconceptions about its compatibility with religious principles. The study underscores the necessity for tailored pedagogical strategies and contributes insights to the discourse on language education in culturally rich settings. Keywords: English language teaching, teachers’ experiences, Indonesian pesantren
