Abstract

This study aims to explain how language plays a significant role in improving the performance of regional development banks in Indonesia. The method used was qualitative with a questionnaire instrument involving 6 regional development banks in Indonesia. Some of the main findings are 24 statements were found, 19 of which fall into 5 categories, namely assertive illocutionary speech acts, directive illocutionary speech acts, expressive illocutionary speech acts, commissive illocutionary speech acts, and declarative illocutionary speech acts. In its implementation, the process emphasizing the humanistic approach scored over 90%. By prioritizing language training initiatives that emphasize the mastery of illocutionary speech acts, regional banks in Indonesia can expect improved operational efficiency, strengthened customer relationships and a more strategic approach to communication, contributing to the overall development and success of the banking sector. This study is limited to the context of only one type of bank, the regional development bank. It is further suggested that there is a strong need to provide adequate and timely capacity building for the employees of regional development banks, particularly in language training as part of public service and satisfaction development.

Abstract

Abstract

Social media has changed the people perspective about beauty because it shapes beauty standard by giving exposure to particular body shape and skin tone. This research aims to investigate the ideology in the concept of beauty in local brand of skincare products in Indonesia via Instagram. Those two local brands are chosen because it shows how different ideologies are starting to be contested: “whiteness’ and ‘local’ beauty. This concept cannot be ignored because it is rooted in imperialism and colonialism. To reveal the ideology, this research began with the analysis of visual and verbal texts in Instagram posts from two official accounts, Kezia Skincare and Votre Peau. This case study uses Critical Discourse Theory proposed by Jäger & Maier and then supported by theories developed within social semiotics. The data in this research were collected by applying four steps adopted from Bezemer and Jewitt and in analyzing the data this research focuses on the discourse fragments to reveal the ideological statements. Linguistic and non-linguistic features are used intersemiotically to strengthen the message of ‘whiteness’ and ‘brightness’ beauty is within the customer reach. Although, one of beauty products has promoted the ‘local’ beauty, the consistency is still questioned because whiteness beauty ideology and the pan-Asian beauty still leaves the trace in representing the beauty thorough process types, metaphors, pathos and images.

Abstract

As the national language, Indonesian plays a strategic role as a national identity and an instrument of global diplomacy. In line with Law Number 24 of 2009, the internationalization of Indonesian is carried out through the Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) program. This research aims to analyze the position of Indonesian, language politics and planning, and BIPA development strategies through a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach. The PAR method was implemented through planning, action, and reflection with BIPA teachers in France during a training session held on July 17–18, 2025, at the Indonesian Embassy in France. The results indicate that Indonesian has strengths in terms of regulations, history, and number of speakers, as well as significant potential to become an international language. However, weaknesses remain, such as low public ideological understanding and limited vocabulary. The implementation of language policy also faces challenges in the public sphere. The BIPA development strategy emphasizes ongoing training, strengthening teaching materials, research, and cross-institutional collaboration. The PAR approach has proven effective in producing contextual and sustainable solutions.

Abstract

The podcast phenomenon is one of the most popular forms of media in today’s digital world. Podcasts serve as a medium of communication in various contexts, such as entertainment, education, and news. In this context, speech acts and the use of politeness strategies play a crucial role in the interaction between guests and hosts. This study examines illocutionary meaning in podcast interactions as a communication strategy. Illocutionary speech acts refer to social actions performed through speech, such as stating, requesting, or promising, which go beyond the literal meaning of the words used (Bach & Harnish, 1979). The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method. The data in this study consist of podcasts on the topic of teenage victims of bullying on social media. Analysis of 531 utterances across two podcast episodes revealed that constative acts dominated the guest’s turns (88.36–90%), while directive acts dominated the host’s turns (63.15–73.94%). These findings suggest that podcast hosts heavily rely on asking questions and offering advice to steer emotionally sensitive conversations, thereby offering practical implications for responsible language use in digital media. These findings offer practical implications for podcast content creators to adopt polite and empathetic language strategies in digital media discourse.
