Abstract

Empowering women entails bolstering their mentality and state of mind, as patriarchy is founded not only on sexuality. Addressing a married woman with the name of her husband or first son is claimed to be a sign of respect. Woman’s public inclusion is also still considered undervalued, which is shown in the way they name eateries. This study, which unfolds eatery names in Yogyakarta Municipality in Indonesia and Malacca in Malaysia, two places with identical historical backgrounds, analysed women’s efforts to increase their bargaining position in society through the naming of their eateries. Although two eateries do place women in a strong position, many of them still struggle to achieve women’s positionalities and social respect.

Abstract

Racism has become the biggest social issue in the world because of its constant unjust treatment that affects people from minority races, ethnicities, and religions. Related to this issue, The Hate U Give conveys the social condition where racial disparity towards black people is profoundly represented in the narrative. This study focuses on identifying the ideational metafunction elements, including transitivity and ergativity patterns found in the narrative. It reveals how the racial disparity is performed by the use of the meta function. Mixed method research was employed to collect and analyze the data to yield more insightful information that complements both methodologies’ findings. The theory of Systemic Functional Grammar was used to identify and classify the ideational metafunction elements from the collected narrative, and the Discourse Analysis approach was applied as a theoretical approach to support the observation. The result concluded that in the analysis of transitivity patterns, material and relational processes dominate the narrative by approximately 25% to 33% of the entire collected narrative. The findings show that racial disparity in analyzing black people that was performed by law enforcement in the collected narrative is manifested in three forms: police brutality, racial profiling, and sentencing policy.

Abstract

Raya and the Last Dragon is a popular animated film from Walt Disney Animation Studios, featuring an antagonist named Namaari. This study aims to examine the interactive meaning of a particular scene and determine the representation of power by Namaari as the female antagonist character during the orientation stage, specifically from minute 0:11:54 to 0:16:37. To identify the representation of Namaari in the movie, a combination of verbal and non-verbal modes is analyzed. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, utilizing Kress and van Leeuwen’s visual grammar theory to investigate movement, Baldry and Thibault’s approach to analyze the macrophase, and Halliday’s textual metafunction to examine the verbal mode. Additionally, Sutherland's power model, incorporating Allen’s conception of power, is used for a deeper analysis of female power. The study reveals that Namaari embodies different types of power as a female antagonist, such as power-over, power-to, and power-with, based on the frameworks of Sutherland and Feltey. Besides adapting masculine traits, Namaari demonstrates her power through verbal clauses, detachment, and equality angles. These features portray Namaari as an equal to Raya, both verbally and visually. Namaari tends to convey information through declarative clauses, adopting a friendly demeanor (using positive face strategies) to deceive Raya and gain access to the Dragon Gem.

Abstract

Video game is a new media of telling stories to young people and adults and it is no longer seen as gameplay only but gameplay with story. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain took Cold War as the main story background tells the story differently. The game system of this video game offers freedom to players to interact with anything during the gameplay, but this freedom has consequences. Applying social semiotic approach, this paper aims to identify how appraisal theory and narrative representation can be used to promote ecological awareness. After observing, collecting and viewing, transcribing and analyzing multimodal data, the researchers find that killing non-playable characters in form of human and animals and even enemy will reduce the score which is important in developing the playable characters’ weapons and equipment. Adopting the theory from Martin White in appraisal theory and Kress and van Leewuen, Caple in narrative representation, this paper also finds that appraisal theory is used to guide the players to play in ethical way such as using non-lethal weaponry, capturing wild animals to protect them from war, and collecting medical plants as needed only, besides, the enemy soldiers can be hired and give beneficial results to the players when they are used to play. In narrative representation, the freedom of choices is designed to make ethical play more plausible.
