Abstract

In the context of globalization of education, where students often come from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds, interactions between teachers and students play a key role in effective learning experiences. This research emerged from awareness of the need to understand how interactions between teachers and students occur in international classrooms, particularly in biology and chemistry departments. This research aims to analyze differences in student interactions in international classes based on science faculties. This research is comparative research obtained through random sampling. The sample for this research was 88 students who were enrolled in the international class program at the science faculty. Data was collected using an in-class interaction instrument with 29 items. The analysis technique uses descriptive and independent sample t-tests. These findings indicate that there are significant differences in the level of interaction between students majoring in biology and chemistry in international classes. Apart from that, classroom interaction also provides opportunities for collaboration between students so that they can increase their self-confidence in their learning abilities. Building strong relationships among students also contributes to increasing positive attitudes towards learning through motivation and engagement.

Abstract

This descriptive research aimed to identify the writing skills of students engaged in the Think-Pair-Share (TPS) collaborative learning during English classroom activities. The study focused on 32 students from the Fashion 4 Department at SMKN 3 Payakumbuh Vocational High School, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a set of writing tests, where students collaboratively wrote personal letters being involved in the TPS, and a set of questionnaires to gather feedback from both students and the teacher regarding the implementation of the TPS. The results revealed that students demonstrated strong writing skills in various aspects of personal letter writing, including generic structures, vocabulary usage, grammar, and mechanics. According to the school's Criteria of Learning Mastery (KKM), the students' writing skills were classified as above average, with scores ranging from 75.5 to 94, indicating the effectiveness of the TPS collaborative activities in enhancing writing skills. Based on these findings, several recommendations are proposed for teachers, students, and future researchers. Teachers should continue to facilitate and oversee the use of TPS in writing instruction. Students are encouraged to practice letter-writing extensively, particularly focusing on improving their paragraph writing skills. Future researchers should explore the challenges students face in organizing paragraphs while writing various types of letters.

Abstract

Direct Method is a teaching strategy that emphasizes the full use of the target language. Its application can encourage students' active engagement and in-depth understanding of the target language. However, its application in large groups has several limitations, such as limited time for individual feedback and low student participation. Therefore, the use of the Direct Method in small group sessions can improve students' comprehension and engagement in English learning. This study explored students' perceptions of the Direct Method in ELT small group sessions, focusing on comprehension and engagement. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five English Language Education students who had experienced the application of the Direct Method in small group sessions. The results showed that the Direct Method significantly improved students' comprehension, especially in vocabulary, listening, and speaking skills, by familiarizing them with English and providing opportunities for them to express their ideas. Furthermore, the small group sessions allowed for more focused interaction between teachers and students, resulting in more detailed feedback and increased student confidence. The study also highlighted the importance of teachers as a key role in fostering student engagement through interaction, motivation, and feedback, as well as the importance of incorporating relevant and interesting learning topics to increase participation. Despite challenges related to students' varying levels of English proficiency, these findings confirm the effectiveness of the Direct Method in small group sessions in promoting active learning and improving comprehension.
