Abstract

Aquaponics is the cultivation of fish and plants in a series of systems, either in one container or in separate containers, by paying attention to the balance between fish, plants, and aquatic microorganisms. One of the obstacles in aquaponic activities is that vegetable growth is not optimal due to a lack of dissolved nutrients, so further research is needed to make better plant growth. This study aimed to evaluate catfish and water spinach growth performance in an aquaponic system by adding AB mix nutrients at different fish stocking densities. This study used a completely randomized design with three differences in stocking densities of catfish (150 fish/m3, 200 fish/m3, and 250 fish/m3) as test animals with four replications where AB mix was added to each treatment. The growth performance of catfish is better in control with a stocking density of 250 fish/m3 and without adding nutrients. The growth performance of catfish decreased with the addition of AB mix nutrients, while the growth of water spinach was better. The growth rate of catfish without adding AB mix nutrients was higher than in other treatments. In contrast, all treatments with the addition of AB mix increased the growth performance of water spinach, with the stocking density of catfish not affecting the growth of water spinach plants. Abstract

The freshwater lobster Cherax quadricarinatus is an aquaculture commodity with high economic value, yet it remains relatively unfamiliar to the general public. Nevertheless, market demand for this species has shown a significant upward trend, both domestically and internationally. In Indonesia, the increase of aquaculture production specially on freshwater lobster has not been sufficient to meet existing demand, primarily due to the limited availability of high-quality broodstock and the low reproductive capacity of female brood lobsters. One potential strategy to address this issue is the optimization of feed quality. This study aims to evaluate the effects of a dietary combination consisting of mung bean sprouts (Vigna radiata), white sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas), and commercial pellets enriched with vitamin E on the reproductive performance of female freshwater lobsters. The results indicated that the best feed formulation was observed in Treatment P3, which consisted of 25% mung bean sprouts, 50% Fengli 3 pellets + vitamin E, and 25% white sweet potatoes. This treatment accelerated gonadal maturation to 25 days and resulted in a fecundity of 467.33 eggs, a fertilization rate (FR) of 97.84%, a hatching rate (HR) of 92.70%, and a survival rate (SR) of 90.87%. The content of vitamins A, C, and E in mung bean sprouts is known to stimulate spawning and enhance embryo hatchability, while bioactive compounds in white sweet potatoes contribute to the synthesis of reproductive hormones such as estrogen and vitellogenin.

Abstract

Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei aquaculture has become a primary alternative to increase national aquaculture production following the decline in tiger shrimp farming due to disease outbreaks. However, the grow-out phase still faces challenges such as limited availability of high-quality post-larvae and deteriorating environmental conditions. The application of probiotics is considered a promising approach, as it can improve water quality, suppress pathogens, and enhance shrimp growth and resilience. This study integrates probiotic application into the grow-out management system to improve production efficiency and sustainability. The research was conducted through direct observation and active participation in farming activities, combined with secondary data collection from verified sources. Observed parameters included mean body weight (MBW), average daily growth (ADG), and survival rate (SR). The grow-out activities involved pond preparation, stocking of post-larvae at a density of 120–180 individuals/m² following acclimatization, blind feeding during the first 10 days, and feed administration based on the feeding rate (FR) thereafter. Daily water quality management and disease control were also carried out. The cultivation period lasted for three months, followed by partial and total harvesting, yielding up to 3 tons of shrimp per pond. Post-harvest, the shrimp were sorted and distributed to consumers using refrigerated vehicles.
