Abstract

Details are presented of the first two Indonesian records of the Little Stint Calidris minuta, discovered during shorebird surveys on the north coast of Aceh Province, Sumatra, between 18 October 2019 and 30 January 2020. As the species has already been recorded multiple times in most of the surrounding countries it is assumed that it had hitherto been overlooked in Indonesia. As further records from other parts of Indonesia can be expected, we summarise key features for distinguishing the species from the very similar Red-necked Stint Calidris ruficollis, with which it often associates.

Abstract

Mangrove forests an intertidal mudflat in the eastern coastal region of Deli Serdang are important habitats for migratory shorebirds. Land-use change and forest conversion threaten this important stopover point for migrating species. The lack of data and information of shorebirds habitats in this area limits conservation efforts and further threatens the survival of these species. The objective of this study is to investigate trends in habitat use by migratory shorebirds. Field work was conducted during migration season starting from October 2014 until April 2015. The presence of migratory shorebirds was assessed using binoculars and a monocular. Scan sampling was used to describe habitat use by shorebirds. The difference in behaviour among habitat was analyzed using analysis of variance. There were 30 species of shorebirds distributed across seven different habitat types in our study area. The most widely used habitat by shorebirds was mudflats, followed by marshes and plantations. This study revealed that mudflat habitat has high potential in supporting the existence of migratory shorebirds in this area.

Abstract

The occurrence of Asian Openbill Anastomus oscitans has been confirmed in Indonesia, specifically in the Sumatra region. Its first two confirmed observations were in December 2019 at Abang Island (Riau Islands) and in September 2020 at Bagan Percut (North Sumatra). We conducted more observations to record its presence in the eastern side of Sumatra Island for several months in 2020. We observed Asian Openbill at three new locations in Riau province. There are many aspects from the occurrences of these birds in the Sumatra region that need to be investigated, especially to picture its current distribution and status, ecological requirement, and potential role as rice pest control.

Abstract

Makrozoobenthos plays a crucial role in ecosystems as producers, primary consumers, and decomposers or detritus that can degrade organic compounds into inorganic ones. As primary consumers, the role of makrozoobenthos is vital for the survival of wildlife, especially various species of shorebirds commonly found in coastal areas and fish-shrimp pond areas. The aims of this research is determining the abundance of makrozoobenthos (ind/m3) and ecological index at the pond in Ulee Matang Village. The diversity of macrozoobenthos species in the area consists of 12 species of three phylum and six classes. The abundance of macrozoobenthos on two type of pond (fish and shrimp) are ranging from 892 ind/m3 to 1400 ind/m3. The Arthropoda phylum, abundant in the research area, notably featured the Water Flea Daphnia sp. that serving as a primary food source for fish and shrimp prior to the introduction of fish and shrimp seeds. This suggests a significant role of arthropods in the food chain, supporting not only fish and shrimp but also macrozoobenthos and shorebirds.
