Abstract

Abstract

This research explains the political satire on Indonesian social media, focusing on the public's response to the constitutional court's decision regarding the vice president's age eligibility for the 2024 elections. Utilising Indonesia's three most prominent social media platforms, such as TikTok, Twitter, and YouTube, the research aims to unravel the various techniques for crafting and delivering political satire through visual and audiovisual media. A comprehensive analysis of 40 distinct satirical pieces was conducted to identify the different techniques. These pieces were collected using digital observation techniques across the specified platforms, supplemented by searches on Google. The methodological framework for the analysis is grounded in Buijzen and Valkenburg's (2004) typology for delivering humour. Our findings unveil a rich tapestry of satirical strategies employed by Indonesian netizens. At least seven distinct techniques were identified: irony, sarcasm, parody, puns, juxtaposition, slapstick, and metaphor. Irony emerged as the most prevalently used technique, indicating its effectiveness in nuanced political critiques. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the interaction between humour and political discourse in the digital age, especially within the Indonesian context. It highlights the significance of satire as a powerful tool for political expression and engagement on social media.

Abstract

This study explores the needs of undergraduate students in learning English Language Teaching (ELT) research methodology, focusing on learners’ perspectives. Employing a quantitative method, data were collected from surveys with 90 undergraduate of English educations students enrolled in the second-level research methodology course, particularly in the areas of instrument design and data analysis. The findings reveal key areas where students face challenges, including limited familiarity with research concepts and a lack of practical experience in conducting studies. Students expressed a strong preference for applying more real-world case studies into the curriculum to make research methodology more engaging and relevant. These findings underline the need for a student-centred approach to teaching ELT research methodology, emphasizing practical skill development and support from the teachers and peers during the project. This study contributes to the field by offering actionable insights for curriculum designers and educators aiming to enhance research methodology instruction for undergraduate ELT students.

Abstract

The public display of the pirate’s “skull-and-crossbones” flag during Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day celebrations represent a visually and politically provocative departure from the conventional use of the national red-and-white emblem. This symbolic substitution not only challenges state-sanctioned rituals of commemoration but also invites scrutiny of how citizens negotiate meanings of nationalism in a shifting socio-political landscape. This study employs Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to explore the layered social meanings, power relations, and identity negotiations embedded in this act. Data were collected from news of online media reports, social media posts, and public commentary circulating between 15 July and 18 August 2025, capturing the period leading up to the official celebrations. The analysis focuses on three key dimensions: (1) the discursive framing of the pirate flag in news and social media; (2) the recontextualization of global pirate iconography within Indonesian socio-political debates; and (3) the role of digital platforms in amplifying and transforming the symbolic act into a broader site of ideological contestation. Findings reveal a deeply polarized interpretive field. Supporters frame the gesture as a creative and non-violent mode of resistance, drawing on humor, satire, and visual disruption to challenge dominant power structures; detractors view it as offensive, unpatriotic, and potentially destabilizing to national unity.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of contemporary Javanese pop music in preserving and transmitting Javanese cultural wisdom, focusing on the works of Ndarboy Genk, a prominent figure in the Javanese modern music scene. The research analyzed the lyrical content of 25 songs written and performed by Ndarboy Genk, including widely recognized tracks such as Wong Sepele, Balungan Kere, Anak Lanang, and Koyo Jogja Istimewa. Using qualitative content analysis supported by theories of cultural preservation and popular discourse, the study examined how traditional Javanese values were embedded and communicated through his lyrics. The findings revealed that Ndarboy Genk’s songs encapsulated a wide range of local wisdom values that reflect Javanese culture's philosophical and ethical dimensions. These included nrimo (acceptance), sabar (patience), andhap asor (humility), teguh ati (emotional resilience), tresna sejati (true love), setya (loyalty), eling lan waspada (mindfulness and caution), and kesederhanaan (simplicity). His lyrics effectively transmit these values to listeners, particularly younger generations through emotionally resonant storytelling and culturally nuanced expressions. Despite the modern and often urban musical style, Ndarboy Genk’s works serve a deeper cultural purpose. The study argues that his music functions not only as entertainment, but as a cultural vehicle that sustains and recontextualizes Javanese identity in the face of contemporary social change. This research highlights the potential of popular music as a medium for cultural education and the preservation of intangible local heritage in modern Indonesia.
