Abstract

Religion has an important role in the lives of Indonesian society as a social institution that functions to maintain social stability. Amidst the diversity of cultures, languages, traditions and religions, conflict and intolerance often arise as challenges to the role of religion in society. Conflict situations that occur due to differences in religious views or understanding often become obstacles to carrying out the role of religion as a social institution. This research aims to examine the concept of religious moderation as an effort to overcome social conflict and discrimination in relation to the role of religion as a social institution. Using qualitative descriptive methods and literature study techniques, this research analyzes themes related to religious moderation and the role of religion from various literary sources so that conclusions can be drawn regarding the role of religion which tries to carry out its function through religious moderation in Indonesia. The research results show that although religion, which is a community belief system, has a significant role in instilling social values, rigid traditional views often hinder inclusiveness and tolerance. This traditional view hinders the implementation of religious moderation which aims to create social harmony, so that religion as a social institution cannot carry out its role. Therefore, the concept of religious moderation needs to be developed as an implementation of the role of religion so that society can live in peace.

Abstract

The role of catechists in the Catholic Church is very important in helping people understand and live Christian teachings through pastoral presence, namely a real presence that builds faith, hope, and love among the people. Catechists are not only teachers, but also spiritual companions who support the daily lives of the people. This study aims to explore the role of catechists in building Christian virtue values while identifying the challenges and opportunities they face in implementing pastoral presence. Through a descriptive qualitative method with a literature study approach, the researcher attempted to analyze literature sources such as books, scientific articles, Church documents and related academic literature. The results of the study show that catechists play an important role in strengthening the faith of the people through teaching, spiritual accompaniment, and strengthening sacramental life, as well as being bearers of hope amidst the various challenges of people's lives. In addition, through pastoral presence, they motivate people to realize love in real actions, such as social service and community solidarity. However, this study also revealed a number of challenges, such as limited training, a shortage of catechists in remote areas, and the influence of modernity that encourages secularization and individualism. The findings show the need for innovation in the pastoral approach, by being present among the people to answer the increasingly diverse needs of the people. This study concludes that the pastoral presence of catechists is a real manifestation of the Church's shepherding and the embodiment of Christ's love among the people. These findings are expected to provide insight into the development of catechist formation programs and more effective pastoral service strategies so that the Church remains relevant in facing changing times and modern challenges, while strengthening the values of Christian virtue among Catholics.

Abstract

Liturgy is the summit and source of life in the Catholic Church. In the celebration of the liturgy, the People of God participate in the mystery of Christ’s death and resurrection. In the context of Indonesia, which consists of diverse ethnicities and cultures, inculturation becomes a highly promising means to make Christ more present in an Indonesian cultural form. This study aims to examine, from theological and pastoral perspectives, the practice of liturgical inculturation in the Catholic Church of East Barito in light of the Second Vatican Council document Sacrosanctum Concilium. The main focus of this research is to understand how Dayak culture is integrated into liturgical celebrations without changing the essence of the Catholic faith and how this process enriches the faith experience of the local community. The research method used is library research, involving an in-depth analysis of Church documents, academic literature, and relevant studies related to contextual liturgy and cultural inculturation. The findings indicate that Sacrosanctum Concilium provides a strong theological foundation for liturgical renewal and openness to local cultural values. Liturgical inculturation in East Barito is manifested through the use of local languages, traditional music, indigenous symbols, and local architecture in the celebration of the liturgy, which deepens the participation of the faithful and strengthens their identity as Dayak Catholics. However, the study also reveals challenges such as the risk of syncretism, superficial understanding of cultural symbols, and differing interpretations between the faithful and Church leaders. Therefore, continuous liturgical formation and intercultural dialogue are necessary so that inculturation does not remain merely aesthetic but truly becomes a means of evangelization and an encounter with Christ who is present within Dayak culture. This research is expected to serve as a reference for developing catechetical and pastoral inculturation in the Indonesian Catholic Church.

Abstract

Marriage is one of the fundamental aspects of human life that not only involves social dimensions but also carries deep religious significance. The Catholic Church regards marriage as a Sacrament. In the pluralistic context of East Barito Regency, the understanding and appreciation of the sacramental value of Catholic marriage present a particular challenge. This study aims to analyze the meaning of Catholic marriage as a sacrament from the perspective of Church law and its application amid religious and cultural pluralism in East Barito Regency. The research employs a qualitative method with a library research approach, focusing on content analysis of primary sources such as the 1983 Code of Canon Law and magisterium Church documents, as well as secondary sources in theology, law, and pastoral studies. The data were analyzed descriptively and qualitatively through conceptual and normative approaches to examine the relationship between sacramental theology and canon law. The results show that Catholic marriage has two essential dimensions— theological and juridical— which unite in the sacred covenant between husband and wife. In the pluralistic context of East Barito, the Church faces challenges in applying canonical norms to traditional customs and mixed marriages, thus requiring a pastoral approach that is dialogical and inculturative. In conclusion, Church law serves not merely to regulate but to guide the faithful in living the sacrament of marriage as a sign of God’s love within a diverse society.
