Abstract

The Batak Toba traditional wedding ceremony is a significant cultural practice that reflects the social identity and kinship structure of the Batak Toba community. This study aims to analyze the transformation of Batak Toba wedding rituals in the modern context, particularly in Medan City, where urbanization, modernization, and globalization strongly influence traditional practices. Using Alexander Duranti's theoretical framework, this research explores the ideological, symbolic, and structural changes in key stages of the ceremony, such as marhusip, marhata sinamot, and ulaon pesta. A qualitative methodology was employed, incorporating in-depth interviews, participant observations, and document analysis. The findings reveal that while core elements such as the exchange of ulos and the reinforcement of kinship ties remain intact, significant shifts have occurred, including a transition from communal preparations to catering services and the simplification of rituals due to economic pressures and modern lifestyles. This study lies in its specific focus on the Batak Toba community in an urban setting, highlighting how traditional ceremonies adapt to modern influences while retaining their cultural essence.

Abstract

This study evaluates the lexical density of reading materials in the K13 English textbooks used in Indonesian secondary schools, focusing on the alignment of text complexity with students' cognitive abilities and language proficiency levels. A total of 10 reading texts from both junior and senior high school textbooks were analyzed, covering various genres including narrative, descriptive, expository, and functional texts. Lexical density, defined as the proportion of content words (nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs) relative to the total word count, was calculated for each text. The results revealed significant variations in lexical density across genres, with descriptive and report texts exhibiting higher complexity, while genres like narratives and procedures showed a more balanced lexical composition. The study found that texts with higher lexical density may be challenging for lower-level learners, while more balanced texts are likely more accessible. These findings suggest that, while some texts are appropriately challenging, others may require adjustments to better cater to students' proficiency levels. The study highlights the importance of revising the K13 English textbooks to enhance their suitability for diverse learners and align more effectively with the goals of the K13 curriculum. The use of lexical density as an objective metric provides valuable insights for improving the readability and overall effectiveness of English language education in Indonesia. This research implies that curriculum designers and textbook authors should consider incorporating a wider range of text complexities to accommodate varying student proficiency levels, ensuring equitable learning opportunities and improved language development outcomes

Abstract

This study evaluates the quality of the English textbook for Grade XI of senior high school in Indonesia, titled Pathway to English Tingkat Lanjut, using a qualitative document analysis methodology. The research examines the textbook based on established criteria for high-quality English learning materials, including practical considerations, layout and design, activities, skills development, language types, and subject content. Data were collected through a systematic review of the textbook's structure, exercises, and content, which were then compared to pedagogical standards and best practices in English language teaching. The findings reveal that the textbook meets expectations in terms of practical considerations, layout, design, activities, and basic skills development. However, it lacks essential supporting materials such as workbooks and audio resources, which are critical for comprehensive language learning. It also provides a general overview of content rather than a detailed introduction and offers limited coverage of grammar and vocabulary, with no emphasis on natural pronunciation, authentic language usage, or diverse registers and accents. The grammar explanations are not concise or user-friendly, and the examples provided are insufficient for learners' needs. Moreover, the subject matter lacks variety, reducing its ability to engage and motivate students. These findings underscore the need for targeted revisions to address these shortcomings, aligning the textbook with modern pedagogical standards and enhancing its effectiveness in fostering real-life English communication skills. Future research should explore the integration of multimedia resources and evaluate the textbook's impact in classroom settings.
