Abstract

This study aims to investigate teachers’ and students’ perceptions of the implementation of the independent curriculum in English language learning. Conducted across six different schools (two elementary schools, two junior high schools, and two senior high schools), the research use the qualitative approach using a descriptive phenomenological design. The data were collected through interviews and questionnaires. The findings reveal that teachers perceive the independent curriculum as providing greater flexibility and creativity in teaching, enabling them to implement student-centered approaches and innovative methods such as using visual media, learning modules and technology. Teachers also value the variety of assessments, including diagnostic, formative, and summative evaluations. However, challenges such as administrative burdens and gaps in students' abilities remain significant. From the students' perspective, the curriculum is seen as engaging and interactive, with project-based tasks enhancing motivation and skill development. Nevertheless, students face difficulties in mastering vocabulary and grammar and building self-confidence, often exacerbated by unequal access to learning resources. This study concludes that the Independent Curriculum has significant potential to enhance English language learning by fostering active student engagement and teacher innovation. To maximize its effectiveness, recommendations include providing adequate resources, reducing administrative burdens, and enhancing teacher training to address implementation challenges.

Abstract

The increasing growth of the financial industry makes companies experience intense competitive pressure. PT Dotri Gadai Jaya (PT DGJ) is a private pawnshop company, facing challenges in maintaining and increasing customer loyalty amidst this competition. One of the strategies used by PT DGJ is to provide rewards to customers based on the number of pawn loan transactions. However, companies experience difficulties in grouping reward recipient customers efficiently and accurately. To overcome this problem, it is necessary to apply data mining using the K-Medoids algorithm. The main objective of this research is to apply the K-Medoids algorithm in grouping reward recipient customers at PT DGJ, knowing the grouping results, and evaluating the results using the Davies Bouldin Index (DBI). The results of the grouping of 1,085 customers are 314 customers who received a 30% reward, 540 customers with a 20% reward and 231 customers with a 10% reward. The cluster evaluation result using DBI is 0.368812, which means the cluster quality value is close to 0 or is quite small. So it can be said that the resulting cluster is quite good.

Abstract

This community service examines the use of imaginative games in English learning to develop student character through the 6C framework: Collaboration, Communication, Content, Critical Thinking, Creative Innovation, and Self-Confidence. This activity was conducted with seventh grade students at Agios Nikolaus Gunungsitoli Christian Private Junior High School using observation sheets, field notes and student worksheets to analyze the impact of imaginative play on language learning outcomes and character building. The findings showed that most students demonstrated strong collaboration and communication skills, participating effectively in group activities and verbal interactions. Comprehension of materials and critical thinking skills also improved, with 87.5% of students (14 out of 16) showing a strong understanding of English learning materials, including grammar and vocabulary. A total of 68.75% of students (11 out of 16) were able to analyze and solve problems effectively, although further development is needed to improve their critical thinking skills. However, creative innovation was less developed, with only half of the participants actively exploring new ideas. Self-confidence saw a significant improvement, with 81.25% of students (13 out of 16) showing high levels of self-confidence. This reflects the effectiveness of the imaginative play method in helping students feel confident using language. In conclusion, the 6C’s imaginative play effectively supports language acquisition and character education, particularly in enhancing communication, collaboration, and confidence, though additional strategies are needed to further improve creativity and critical thinking. This approach offers a holistic and engaging method for integrating character development into English language learning.

Abstract

This study explores the effectiveness of training in developing English language teaching materials using the CarouselMaker platform among fourth-semester English Education students at Nias University. The program aimed to equip students with skills in creating interactive and digital-based learning content suitable for 21st-century classrooms. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, with data collected through questionnaires, and field notes. Results indicate that while most participants improved their technical ability in using CarouselMaker, many still relied on facilitator guidance and lacked confidence in applying the tool independently. Discussion participation was also limited. Despite these challenges, students showed enthusiasm for continuing similar trainings and recognized the relevance of digital tools in modern English Language Teaching (ELT). The findings highlight the need for extended mentoring and a personalized training approach to strengthen participants’ independence and pedagogical confidence. This training underscores the importance of preparing future English teachers to utilize digital media effectively, fostering innovation and engagement in the learning process.

Abstract

Teaching English to children aged 3–5 years presents unique challenges related to their developmental characteristics, particularly in non-formal early childhood education settings. This study aims to explore the challenges faced by English teachers in teaching young learners at PPA Krammer Hilina'a. A descriptive qualitative research design was employed to obtain an in-depth understanding of classroom practices and teacher experiences. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations involving one teacher/student practitioner responsible for teaching English for Young Learners (EYL). The data were analyzed thematically to identify key challenges and instructional responses. The findings reveal that teachers face significant pedagogical difficulties, including children’s limited ability to understand abstract concepts, rapid memory loss, and interference from the first language (L1). Classroom management emerged as the most prominent challenge, characterized by short attention spans, high energy levels, and ineffective transitions between learning activities. To address these challenges, teachers implemented visual-based learning strategies, such as flashcards and presentation slides, combined with emotional and patient interaction and direct engagement with students. These approaches contributed to improved learner participation and confidence. The study concludes that teaching English to very young learners in non-formal educational contexts requires developmentally appropriate strategies and strong classroom management skills. Therefore, targeted training in early childhood pedagogy and English for Young Learners is recommended to enhance teaching effectiveness.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to improve vocational high school students’ English speaking skills through the utilization of Artificial Intelligence (AI)–based learning technology. The activity was conducted at SMK Swasta Emmanuel Agung and focused on addressing students’ low speaking confidence, limited opportunities for oral practice, and the lack of innovative learning media in English instruction. The implementation employed an experiential learning approach consisting of material presentation, demonstration, and direct speaking practice using an AI-based learning platform. Data were collected through observation, field notes, and activity documentation, and analyzed using descriptive qualitative techniques. The results indicate that the integration of AI technology in English learning positively influenced students’ speaking performance, particularly in terms of pronunciation accuracy, fluency, and self-confidence. Students demonstrated increased participation and motivation during speaking activities, supported by immediate feedback provided by the AI system. These findings suggest that AI-based learning serves as an effective and applicable instructional strategy for enhancing English speaking skills in vocational education. Therefore, the integration of Artificial Intelligence in English learning is recommended as a sustainable approach to support students’ communicative competence and readiness for the global workforce.

Abstract

This community service program aims to describe the manifestation of deep learning principles—joyful, meaningful, and mindful learning—in teaching English for young learners in a non-formal education setting. The program was conducted at a Pusat Pengembangan Anak (PPA) involving learners aged 9–11 years and implemented over seven instructional meetings. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, with data collected through field notes and observation sheets. The findings show that joyful learning was manifested through students’ enthusiasm, active participation, and positive emotional engagement during learning activities. Meaningful learning appeared as students connected English materials with their daily experiences and used language in relevant contexts. Mindful learning was reflected in students’ attention, cooperation, and gradual awareness of the learning process. These findings indicate that deep learning principles can be effectively implemented in non-formal English learning contexts and highlight the potential of community-based programs in supporting meaningful and sustainable English education for young learners.
