Abstract

This study investigates the multifaceted role of zakat in promoting not only poverty alleviation but also communal security, social stability, and sustainable community development. The research aims to expand the traditional understanding of zakat by highlighting its potential to address economic disparities and foster social cohesion. Employing a qualitative research design and secondary data analysis, the study systematically examines existing literature to assess the broader social and economic impacts of zakat. The findings demonstrate that effective zakat management can significantly mitigate social unrest by alleviating poverty, reducing unemployment, and addressing economic inequalities. Moreover, the study underscores the pivotal role of Islamic education in enhancing zakat's impact. By equipping recipients with financial literacy, entrepreneurial skills, and investment strategies, Islamic education enables sustainable resource management and economic empowerment. The research concludes that zakat, when combined with targeted educational interventions, can serve as a powerful tool for fostering financial security and communal peace. By integrating these approaches, zakat has the potential to become a catalyst for long-term social stability and the development of resilient, self-sustaining communities.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore how Zakat funds can be leveraged to empower small-scale farmers to facilitate enhanced agricultural outputs and contribute to the 2nd United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of eradicating hunger in Babura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, Nigeria. It is an undeniable fact that Zakat funds are meant for the eight prescribed recipients as enshrined by the Quran, this study through a painstaking and contextual consideration drawing from the opinions of Muslim Jurists seeks to elucidate how this form of almsgiving can mobilize financial resources essential for agricultural improvements in the context of Babura small-scale farmers. This exploration aims to provide a comprehensive framework for understanding the multifaceted role of Zakat in transforming agricultural practices within Babura Town. Qualitative secondary data were sourced from Islamic classical literature, academic journals, books and reports from reputable organizations. The data were evaluated to ensure relevance, credibility and reliability and also validated using data triangulation and comparing findings of other studies. The data were analyzed thematically. The research shows that zakat can significantly improve agricultural productivity among small-scale farmers in Babura Town and contribute to the realization of 2nd SDG. It is recommended that Babura LGA Authorities should partner with local zakat committees to integrate zakat funds into local agricultural policies which can improve access to essential agricultural resources, ensure efficient funds distribution, and train the farmers on sustainable agricultural practices.

Abstract

This study explores the application of Qur’anic values in entrepreneurial practices and their implications for micro and small enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia and Nigeria. Using a qualitative field-based approach supported by library research, five institutions were examined: KOMIDA, Pesantren Daarut Tauhiid, Warteg Syariah, Kampung Marketer, and Jaiz Bank. Findings show that values such as ṣidq (honesty), ʿadl (justice), amanah (responsibility), taʿāwun (mutual assistance), prohibition of riba, and pursuit of barakah are operationalized through mechanisms including interest-free microfinance, group accountability, transparent pricing, faith-based entrepreneurship education, and inclusive institutional financing. In Indonesia, these practices foster trust, solidarity, and sustainability among MSMEs, while in Nigeria, Jaiz Bank demonstrates institutional commitment by expanding sector-specific support. The study’s novelty lies in bridging normative Qur’anic ethics with cross-country empirical evidence, positioning Islamic entrepreneurship as an alternative development paradigm balancing profitability, sustainability, and spiritual accountability. The comparison specifically focuses on dialectics of applying Qur’anic values across different ecosystem dimensions in two distinct context. Practical recommendations include: 1) embedding Qur’anic ethics in entrepreneurship education, SME training, and halal branding and 2) emphasizing policy reforms such as zakat and waqf digitalization, Islamic microfinance strengthening, and aligning regulation with maqāṣid al-sharīʿah. These insights highlight the transformative potential of Qur’anic values in shaping ethical, inclusive, and resilient economic ecosystems.
