Abstract

Rapid urbanization in Indonesia has intensified debates on how spatial expansion reshapes social organization, inequality, and governance capacity, yet institutional reports often present growth as a technical development trajectory rather than a structural social transformation. This study critically examines how urban change is constructed within official narratives produced by Badan Pusat Statistik and UN-Habitat, asking how statistical framing influences interpretations of social structure. Employing a non-empirical qualitative design, the research conducts a critical document-based review using discourse analysis, comparative policy reading, and socio-spatial interpretation of institutional reports published over the last fifteen years. The findings indicate that demographic concentration, housing provision, and infrastructure expansion dominate institutional narratives, while relational dimensions such as social cohesion, informal networks, and distributive inequality remain underrepresented. This imbalance shapes policy discourse by privileging technocratic planning logics and narrowing the conceptualization of urban transformation. The study concludes that urbanization in Indonesia operates not only as a spatial process but also as a knowledge-production regime in which measurement practices influence governance priorities and social outcomes, highlighting the need for more reflexive integration of social theory into urban policy analysis.

Abstract

This study synthesizes interdisciplinary scholarship to explain how urbanization and structural transformation reconfigure local communities in Southeast Asia through multi-scalar institutional, spatial, and sustainability dynamics. The analysis demonstrates that economic restructuring, migration, and mega-urban expansion operate as interdependent processes that reshape governance arrangements, inequality patterns, and community agency. Institutional mediation emerges as a critical mechanism translating macro transformation into differentiated social outcomes, while community practices actively renegotiate access to resources and representation. Sustainability transitions further embed ecological constraints within urban development, positioning resilience as a co-produced achievement of governance innovation and collective adaptation. By integrating structural, socio-spatial, and institutional perspectives, the study advances a unified framework that conceptualizes communities as active nodes within evolving urban systems. This framework clarifies how inequality, environmental risk, and governance fragmentation interact across scales, generating adaptive pathways rather than linear outcomes. The findings contribute to urban theory by foregrounding community agency in structural change and offer analytically grounded insights for policy approaches that align economic transformation, social inclusion, and ecological resilience in rapidly urbanizing regions.

Abstract

This study explores the educational contributions and intellectual legacy of Kiai Hasan Maolani, a prominent Islamic scholar who lived during the Dutch colonial era in Kuningan Regency, West Java. The research centers on his biography and his significant role as both a religious and educational figure, whose influence extended beyond regional boundaries, attracting students from Central and East Java. Employing a historical method that integrates heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, this study utilizes both primary and secondary sources to reconstruct his educational activities. The findings reveal that Kiai Hasan Maolani founded Pesantren Lengkong, which emerged as a vital institution for Islamic religious education and intellectual development. Through this pesantren, he implemented a holistic educational philosophy encompassing key concepts such as the pursuit of knowledge (thalabul 'ilm), worship (ibadah), Islamic monotheism (tawhid), social cohesion through visits and religious networking (silaturahmi and ziyarah), charitable practices (amal), and spiritual struggle (jihad). The research concludes that Kiai Hasan Maolani’s educational model not only shaped the intellectual character of his time but also laid the foundation for a resilient pesantren-based learning tradition in West Java.
