Abstract

Background: The most lasting gifts a business could pass on to the next generation is who is next to take over the family-owned business. Little studies have been done on succession plan among family-own business in Nigeria. Objective: This study examines personality traits and socio-demographic factors as likely predictors of succession planning among family-owned businesses in Ibadan metropolis. Cross-sectional survey design using purposive sampling technique was used to sample seven family-owned businesses. Data were collected from 120 participants using standardized questionnaires. Zero-order correlation statistics and multiple regression analysis were utilized to analyze the collected data. Results: The result revealed that personality traits jointly predicted succession planning among participants. Also, age, education, gender, job status, marital status, and work experience jointly predicted succession planning among participants. Finally, marital status and work experience independently predicted succession planning. Conclusion: Personality traits and socio-demographic factors were robust predictors of succession planning among family-owned businesses in Ibadan. The novelty of this finding is that succession planning is rarely studied among family-owned businesses.

Abstract

Deviant behaviors among in-school adolescents have been on the increased over the years. Studies that have examined different predictors of deviant behaviors have produced varied results. Therefore, this study examines parenting styles, social network, age and gender as predictors of deviant behavior among in-school adolescents in Ibadan South-west Local Government Area (LGA). Cross-sectional survey design was adopted while simple random sampling technique was used to select five public secondary schools in the LGA. Data were collected from 200 in-school adolescents using validated scales and analyzed using multiple regression and independent samples t-test to test two hypotheses. The result showed that parenting styles and social network jointly predicted deviant behavior among in-school adolescents (R2 = .05, F (2, 194) = 4.89, p .05). Also, the result revealed that age and gender jointly predicted deviant behavior [R2 = .10, F( 5,195) = 2.13, p .05]. Finally, both age (β = -.14, p .05) and gender (β =.17, p .05) independently predicted deviant behavior. The study concluded that parenting styles, social network, age and gender are excellent predictors of deviant behavior among in-school adolescents. The study recommended parents, school counselors and other stakeholders should provide good examples for adolescentsagainst deviant behaviors

Abstract

Quality of life has remained a recurring theme in research considering it’s important in the overall psychological well-being of the individuals. Several predictors have been used to investigate quality of life among different populations and samples with varied results. Importantly, studies investigating undergraduate quality of life tend to be scarce. Therefore, this study investigated the predictive ability of anxiety and depression on quality of life among undergraduates in Ibadan, Nigeria. Cross-sectional research design was adopted while purposive sampling technique was used to select one university in South-west Nigeria. Data were conveniently collected from 400 undergraduates using validated scales and analyzed using zero-order statistics and multiple regression to test four hypotheses which was accepted at p = .001). The results demonstrated that anxiety and depression jointly and independently predicted the physical, psychological, social relationship and environment domain  quality of life among study participants. The study concludes that anxiety and depression are robust predictors of quality of life among the population of study. The study recommended that parents and other stakeholders should work in synergy to reduce triggers of anxiety and depression and provide for the well-being of the undergraduates.

Abstract

Various stakeholders, including the government, have often neglected the educational needs of physically challenged in-school adolescents in Nigeria. Empirical studies examining the relationship between academic impairment, social support, and resilient behavior in this population remain scarce, particularly within the Nigerian context. Therefore, this study investigated academic impairment and social support as predictors of resilient behavior among physically challenged in-school adolescents in Lagos and Ekiti States in South-West Nigeria. A cross-sectional research design was employed, and purposive sampling was used to select the two states. Data were collected from 374 physically challenged in-school adolescents using validated measurement scales. The data were analyzed using multiple regression and independent samples t-tests to test four hypotheses at a significance level of p < 0.01. The results showed that both academic impairment and support from significant others independently predicted resilient behavior. Furthermore, academic impairment and social support jointly predicted resilience. The findings highlight the crucial role of significant others as a source of social support. The study underscores the need for the government and stakeholders to enhance infrastructure in special schools to improve learning experiences. This research is novel as it is the first to examine these variables across two Nigerian states.

Abstract

Garbage has various categories so it needs to be sorted to make it easier to sort according to its benefits. However, waste sorting is very difficult to implement for some people including in the school environment. Therefore, the objective of this study was to test the effects of visual prompt on waste sorting behavior among students in selected secondary schools in Lagos, Nigeria. Quasi-experimental design was adopted while visual prompt was manipulated at three levels of word, picture and word+ picture to obtain data on waste sorting behavior among 240participants. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics to test one hypothesis which was accepted at p <.001 level of significance. The result demonstrated that picture was the most effective visual prompt that improved waste sorting behavior followed by word + picture prompt and then word prompt compared to the control group. The study concluded that visual prompt improved waste sorting behavior. The novelty of this study is that it is the first time effects of visual prompt on waste sorting behavior is studied using quasi-experimental design in Nigerian schools. The study recommended that school authority and other stakeholders’ interested in solid waste management should design appropriate visual prompts to encourage waste sorting activities in their school environments.

Abstract

Solid waste management remains a pressing challenge that affects environmental quality and public well-being. This study examined the influence of bin location on waste sorting behavior among students in selected secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. This study employed a 2 × 4 quasi-experimental design, in which bins for recyclable materials were placed in classrooms and corridors for a 10-day period. Recyclable waste collected was counted, weighed, and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results showed that bin location marginally improved sorting behavior, with more materials deposited in classroom bins than in corridor bins. This finding suggests that bins placed in classrooms provide greater accessibility and convenience, thereby encouraging consistent sorting behavior, while bins in corridors are less effective due to distractions and increased foot traffic. The study concludes that strategic placement of bins can enhance students’ participation in waste sorting and contribute to more sustainable waste management practices. School authorities are therefore encouraged to consider bin placement as a behavioral intervention to foster environmentally responsible habits among students.

Abstract

This study explores the role of school principals in creating a work environment that supports the psychological well-being of school members. However, it is often overlooked in leadership practices. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through observation and in-depth interviews with principals, vice principals, teachers, and education staff. Thematic analysis revealed that transformational leadership practices—exemplary behaviour, spirituality-based motivation, openness to innovative ideas, and personal attention—contribute significantly to a harmonious and supportive work environment. Principals also facilitated career development, provided emotional support, and ensured adequate facilities, thereby strengthening psychological well-being, including positive interpersonal relationships, autonomy, personal growth, and a clear sense of life purpose. The findings highlight that integrating transformational leadership with spiritual values not only fosters a favourable school climate but also contributes to long-term teacher commitment and educational quality. This study contributes to the literature by demonstrating how leadership practices concretely influence psychosocial dynamics within schools, filling the gap in previous studies that often emphasise only stress and burnout perspectives.
