Abstract

Taur-taur, as a form of vocal art expression of the Simalungun community holding a cultural richness that needs to be preserved. The main focus of this research is on five types of taur-taur, namely Taur taur bahtonang, taur taur simbandar, taur taur Balok ganjang, Taur taur urdo-urdo, and Taur taur tangis-tangis. Each type of taur-taur has unique characteristics whether in terms of melody, lyrics, or social functions within the Simalungun community. Through a qualitative approach, this study finds that taur-taur has distinctive features that set it apart from other forms of folk singing. Musical analysis using Crishty's theory and Merriam's ethnomusicology theory provides a deeper understanding of the vocal techniques and symbolic meanings contained within taur-taur. This research concludes that the preservation of taur-taur is crucial for maintaining Indonesia's cultural diversity. One of the preservation efforts that can be undertaken is to introduce taur-taur to the younger generation through music education.

Abstract

This study analyzes the role of Simalungun popular songs in traditional wedding ceremonies in Pematang Raya Village through textual and musical approaches. The research focuses on three main songs: Sitalasari, Etah Mangalop Boru, and Horas Sayur Matua. A qualitative descriptive method was applied using observation, interviews, and documentation techniques. The findings reveal that Simalungun popular songs function as a medium of cultural communication, a form of prayer and blessing, and a symbol of respect toward social structures and customary values. Musically, the songs use diatonic major scales, moderate tempos (85–100 bpm), and simple rhythmic patterns that reflect the sacred and harmonious atmosphere of the ceremony. The transformation from traditional instruments such as gondrang bolon to modern ones like keyboards and guitars does not diminish their cultural meaning. Instead, these songs embody a creative adaptation that preserves traditional values while embracing modern influences. They play a vital role in maintaining Simalungun cultural identity, strengthening social cohesion, and ensuring the continuity of local traditions amid modernization.

Abstract

This Research is Entitled Analysis of the Meaning of Populer Batak Toba Songs During the Handover of Ulos Hela at Batak Toba Wedding Ceremonines in Medan City.” These three songs are always chosen to be sung before the Ulos Hela is presented to the bride and groom. To analyze the textual meaning in this study, the author uses Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic theory, focusing on denotative and connotative meanings. In addition, the songs Burju Marsimatua, Gabe Maho Boru, and Borhat Ma Dainang contain advice and prayers with connotative meanings that reflect the social values of the Batak Toba community. The research techniques used are fieldwork and desk work as introduced by Bruno Nettl. The author applies a qualitative method through observation, interviews, and audio-video recording. The findings of this study indicate that the Ulos Hela ceremony is a crucial highlight of the Batak Toba wedding tradition, symbolizing parental love, blessings, and the transfer of responsibility from the bride’s parents to the groom’s family.
