Abstract

Efforts to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality through counseling and pregnancy risk screening in at Kelurahan Tuan Kentang Palembang. The maternal mortality rate in South Sumatra is still high. Maternal morbidity and mortality can be avoided by having regular antenatal care (ANC) visits. Although the coverage of ANC in Indonesia is increasing, the number in South Sumatra is still below the national average. Education is needed to increase the knowledge of mothers so that they routinely have pregnancy visits. The aim of the community service in Tuan Kentang Village are to improve knowledge of the importance of ANC and provide pregnancy risk screening to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality. A total of 20 pregnant women participated in this activity. Only nine people (45%) performed ANC in sufficient numbers. Low level of education, lack of knowledge about ANC, and distance to health services are factors that prevent mothers from doing ANC. As many as 17 people (85%) had high risk pregnancies due to age, parity, previous pregnancy history, fetal abnormalities, maternal diseases related to pregnancy or infection, and gynecological disorders. Most of the participants did less ANC visits, and were in the high pregnancy risk category.

Abstract

Clean water reservoirs can become mosquito breeding grounds because water comes from rainwater, water wells, and taps, making them an ideal breeding ground for the Aedes aegypti mosquito vector of the dengue virus. This study aims to determine the hatchability of eggs and the growth of Aedes aegypti in three different types of brooding water in Sako Village, Palembang City. This study is experimental. The sample contains 1200 Aedes aegypti eggs collected from the Health Research and Development Center (Balitbangkes), the Ministry of Health of Indonesia in Baturaja, as well as three types of water collected from the homes of residents suffering from Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever in Sako Village, Sako District, Palembang City. Data was collected through direct observation for 5 days of egg hatching in the third water, which was repeated three times. The study's results were analyzed by the ANOVA, Honest Significant Difference test (BNJ), and R studio software version 4.1.2. The average number of mosquito eggs that hatched in well water was 77.67%, rainwater was 63,335, tap water was 54.67%, and control was 72.33%. There were significant differences in the effects of the three types of air on the larval and pupal stages of Aedes aegypti development. This study shows that Aedes aegypti mosquitos can breed into adults outside of clean water and water that contains soil, such as water wells. Abstract

ABSTRACT Hypertension and chronic kidney disease have a bidirectional relationship in which uncontrolled hypertension accelerates kidney damage, whereas declining kidney function worsens hypertension through fluid retention, activation of the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system, increased sympathetic activity, and endothelial dysfunction. In advanced stages, this interaction may progress to hypertensive emergency with acute target organ damage. This case report describes a 40-year-old woman with stage V chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis who presented with dyspnea, severe headache, nausea, and decreased appetite. Her blood pressure on admission was 193/103 mmHg, accompanied by bilateral fine crackles and signs of anemia. Laboratory examination revealed hemoglobin 6.9 g/dL, urea 80 mg/dL, creatinine 6.2 mg/dL, and an estimated glomerular filtration rate of 9.85 mL/min/1.73 m². Chest radiography showed cardiomegaly and early pulmonary congestion, while electrocardiography showed no acute abnormality. The patient was diagnosed with hypertensive emergency in stage V chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis, accompanied by fluid overload and severe anemia. Management consisted of titrated intravenous nicardipine, correction of volume overload with hemodialysis, and packed red cell transfusion for symptomatic severe anemia. After stabilization, oral antihypertensive agents consisting of amlodipine, candesartan, and clonidine were administered. This case highlights the importance of distinguishing hypertensive emergency from severe hypertension in advanced chronic kidney disease, because this classification determines the need for intravenous therapy, close monitoring, and comprehensive management of associated complications. Keywords: anemia, chronic kidney disease, hemodialysis, hypertensive emergency

Abstract

Worm infections due to Soil Transmitted Helminths (STH) remain a significant public health problem, especially in children aged 5–14 years in areas with limited sanitation, risky environmental conditions, and low levels of family health literacy. Mothers have an important role as the main caregiver in shaping hygiene behavior and disease prevention in children, so that maternal empowerment through health education is an important preventive strategy. This activity aims to analyze the effectiveness of booklet-based health education in improving maternal knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to the prevention of worms in children. Community service activities were carried out in the assisted areas of the University of Muhammadiyah Palembang using a pre-experimental design of one group pretest involving 95 mothers. Interventions are carried out through health counseling using booklet media, presentations, and interactive discussions. Data were collected using pre- and post-intervention questionnaires, then analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. The results showed a significant increase in knowledge (mean 65.83 to 99.42), attitude (63.95 to 99.50), and behavior (65.37 to 100.00) with a p value of < 0.001. All participants experienced changes to the good category after the intervention. These findings show that booklet-based education is effective in improving maternal health literacy and preventive behavior. This education has important implications as a sustainable promotive and preventive strategy to strengthen family-based deworming prevention and improve the health of children in the community.
