Abstract

Language preservation is an important effort to maintain the continuity of language and culture. This study aims to: (1) identify the factors that influence the use of Kualuh Malay among students from Labuhanbatu Utara, (2) analyze the strategies used by students to maintain the language, and (3) evaluate the motivation behind the language maintenance. A descriptive-qualitative method was chosen to gain in-depth understanding through observation, interviews, and documentation. The participants of this study consisted of 18 students. The results show that there are seven factors that influence Kualuh Malay language, including visits to hometowns and usage in the family. Students apply strategies such as family language policy and use in cultural activities. The main reason Labura students maintain Kualuh Malay is their pride of identity. This research recommends that the people of Labuhanbatu Utara continue to integrate the use of Kualuh Malay in daily life and support its preservation in education.

Abstract

This social contribution with the theme "Ecokids: Green Adventures Towards a Better Environment" was the result of the Independent Student Exchange Program (PMM). The community service activities were a real-life implementation of knowledge and experience of the Nusantara Module course. The PMM Batch 4 Inbound students at Samudra University, specifically group 1 “Seumantok” chose an elementary school as the community partner to carry out their service. From the initial survey conducted at school, some students did not understand the importance of environmental awareness and had low knowledge of sorting waste. The participants were 3rd grade elementary school students. The method used was by conducting education with presentations in class and using flip book learning media, games, and open discussions with the students. The results found that grade 3 students were able to learn about awareness and concern for keeping the environment cleaner. Apart from that, students were quite enthusiastic and could sort waste according to the type of waste, namely organic waste and inorganic waste.

Abstract

This study aims define which languages predominate in the Labuhanbatu Utara landscape, how texts are used, and why the texts are used. The study also suggests that societies, stakeholders and governments value local languages (expressions of cultural identity) and the Indonesian language as national identities to communicate formally or informally, especially in public settings. A descriptive qualitative design was used for this research. Bogdan and Biklen (1992) said that qualitative research is descriptive, i.e., it explains what is happening and what the data reveals. The research data was taken from the writings displayed on the nameboard, roadmap, mosque, store, pamphlet, billboard, etc.. installed in the data source in Labuhanbatu Utara. The study's data collection techniques included observation and documenting. According to the study's findings, the Indonesian language and local language have been used more and more in the past, especially in the landscape of government areas.
