Abstract

Essential oil is an aroma-giving liquid that comes from plant parts such as roots, stem bark, fruit, leaves, seeds, flowers or other parts taken through distillation methods and extraction methods using organic solvents or pressed and enzymatically. Essential oils in each plant have different components and characteristics. One of the plants that can be utilized and has essential oil content is green betel leaves (Piper betle L.) and red betel leaves (Piper crocatum Ruiz and Pav). Several studies have been conducted to identify the content of betel leaves. The largest content present in green betel leaves is limonene, while the largest content of red betel leaves is sabinena which has a special structure. These red and green betel leaves, have many characteristics, and benefits. The method used in this writing uses a descriptive literature review, with the aim of this study is to compile a comprehensive literature analysis of the components, structure, hybridization, isomerization, addition reactions and biological activity of betel leaves covering some information based on the results of literature studies.

Abstract

Representational competence is very essential for students because it is associated with the students' ability to use, interpret, translate and integrate chemical representations to understand chemical concepts properly. In this case, implementation of the various representations utilization is required in learning Thermochemistry to improve students' representational competence to fully understand Thermochemistry. Therefore, this study aims to analyze teachers' perceptions towards the understanding and implementation of chemical representations in chemistry learning to improve students' representational competence in thermochemistry. This research is a descriptive quantitative research conducted using survey method that involved 30 chemistry teachers. The sample in this study was taken by purposive random sampling at public and private high schools in East Java. The data were collected through a questionnaire using google form application. According to the results of the study 63.3% of teachers still have difficulty in teaching students the concept of thermochemistry using submicroscopic representations. The majority of teachers only use symbolic representations, even though the other two representations are very important. Although 77% of teachers have understood chemical representations, in teaching and measuring concept understanding, teachers have not integrated chemical representations. This is due to their lack of self-awareness about the importance of using various representations in improving students’ representational competence. Thus, training on representations is necessary in improving teachers’ understanding on chemical representations. The findings of the study stated that teachers’ understanding of representation and teachers’ experience in participating in the trainings contributed to the effectiveness of the implementation of various chemical representations utilization to improve students’ representational competence on the concept of thermochemistry.       Keywords: representational competence, chemical representation, and thermochemistry.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v25i3.pp1559-1576

Abstract

This literature review research aims to determine the instrument test in identifying representational competence in chemistry. The identified abilities involve how students can use, interpret, translate, and connect multiple representations to improve representation competence. The method used in this present study is SLR method by using meta-analysis approach by comparing information in some research literature study from 2011-2021 in the ERIC database, google scholar, and SINTA. Based on the results of research on 7 reviewed articles, it showed that several open-ended questions (57.14%) and multiple-choice instruments (57.14%) are the most widely used instruments to identify students' representational competence. The findings of the research show that there are several instruments that are combined with other instruments to strengthen the analytical method in obtaining data and completing the shortcomings of other instruments. In addition, there are several instruments made by aspects to measure how far the students' representational competence are. The information obtained from the use of the instrument can be used to determine the development of students' abilities in understanding chemistry using representations. Keywords: representational competence in chemistry, instrument test, literature review.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v23i3.pp1099-1111
