Abstract

This study examines the philosophy of essentialism within Islamic education, emphasizing the importance of foundational knowledge and universal values that align with Islamic teachings. Essentialism highlights the necessity of a curriculum grounded in time-tested values as a means to develop character and enhance students' moral integrity. Utilizing a qualitative literature-based approach, this research investigates the core principles of essentialism and its relevance to Islamic educational philosophy. The findings indicate that essentialism provides an educational framework that balances worldly and spiritual knowledge effectively. By incorporating Islamic values found in the Qur'an and Hadith, this approach plays a crucial role in fostering the development of morally upright individuals who can positively contribute to society. Therefore, essentialism proves to be not only relevant in the educational context but also serves as a foundation for cultivating strong and responsive character development in the face of contemporary challenges.Abstrak Penelitian ini membahas aliran esensialisme dalam filsafat pendidikan Islam, yang mengedepankan pengetahuan dasar serta nilai-nilai universal yang relevan dengan ajaran Islam. Esensialisme menekankan pentingnya kurikulum yang berlandaskan nilai-nilai yang telah teruji oleh waktu, sebagai upaya untuk membangun karakter dan memperkuat akhlak siswa. Melalui pendekatan kualitatif berbasis studi literatur, penelitian ini menyelidiki prinsip-prinsip inti esensialisme serta keterkaitannya dengan filsafat pendidikan Islam. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa esensialisme menawarkan kerangka pendidikan yang seimbang antara pengetahuan duniawi dan ukhrawi. Dengan penerapan nilai-nilai Islam yang terkandung dalam Al-Qur’an dan Hadis, pendekatan ini berperan penting dalam mendukung pembentukan individu yang berakhlak mulia dan mampu memberikan kontribusi positif bagi masyarakat. Dengan demikian, esensialisme tidak hanya relevan dalam konteks pendidikan, tetapi juga menjadi landasan bagi pengembangan karakter yang kuat dan responsif terhadap tantangan zaman.

Abstract

This study aims to examine multicultural education from an Islamic perspective. As we know, multicultural education is an approach that emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and valuing diversity in culture, ethnicity, religion, and values within society. From the perspective of Islam, multicultural education is not merely a social process but also a reflection of justice, tolerance, and brotherhood, values taught in the Qur’an and Hadith. Islam teaches that differences are a sunnatullah (divine wisdom) to be embraced wisely as the richness of humanity, not as a source of conflict. The aim of this paper is to investigate and analyze how the values of multicultural education are embedded within Islamic teachings and their relevance in the context of modern education. The method employed is a qualitative-descriptive literature review, gathering various primary and secondary sources on education, multiculturalism, and Islamic values. The findings show that Islamic educational principles such as ukhuwah (brotherhood), tasamuh (tolerance), ta’aruf (mutual acquaintance), and justice closely align with the values of multicultural education. By applying a multicultural education approach grounded in Islamic values, educational institutions can serve as platforms for developing inclusive and moderate character, capable of reducing potential social conflicts. Therefore, multicultural education based on Islamic values is highly relevant for development in Indonesia’s pluralistic society, supporting social harmony and strengthening national integration.
