Abstract

Improving the quality of learning at the elementary school level, particularly in rural areas such as Cluster 1 in Tungkal Jaya District, still faces significant obstacles, as indicated by suboptimal literacy and numeracy outcomes. This study aims to empirically examine the influence of principal leadership and teacher performance on learning quality, both partially and simultaneously, to fill a research gap that rarely examines the context of rural elementary schools holistically. Using a quantitative approach with an ex post facto design, this study employed a saturated sampling technique involving the entire population of 80 teachers as respondents. Data collection was conducted comprehensively through observation, questionnaires, and documentation, which were then analyzed using linear regression techniques. The research findings revealed that principal leadership contributed 22% of the influence, while teacher performance had a more dominant impact at 45.4%. Simultaneously, these two variables contributed significantly to learning quality, amounting to 51%. In-depth analysis revealed that despite regular evaluations, there were crucial weaknesses in principals' managerial problem-solving skills and a lack of enrichment services for high-achieving students. The main conclusion confirms that the synergy between solution-oriented instructional leadership and adaptive teacher pedagogical performance is a vital determinant in boosting the quality of basic education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of interpersonal communication and principal leadership on teacher performance in public vocational schools in the Sungai Lilin subdistrict. The background of this study stems from the suboptimal communication between principals and teachers, as well as variations in leadership styles that affect teacher motivation and performance. The main focus of the study covers three aspects, namely the influence of interpersonal communication on teacher performance, the influence of principal leadership on teacher performance, and the simultaneous influence of these two variables. The research uses a quantitative method with multiple linear regression analysis. The population consists of all teachers at two public vocational schools in the Sungai Lilin sub-district using a saturated sampling technique, so that all 71 teachers were included in the sample. Data collection was carried out through the distribution of questionnaires that had been tested for validity and reliability. The results of the study indicate that interpersonal communication has a significant effect on teacher performance, contributing 51.9%, while principal leadership has a significant effect of 69.6%. Simultaneously, both variables contribute 54.5% to teacher performance, while the remainder is influenced by other factors outside the scope of this study. These findings confirm that effective interpersonal communication and innovative, democratic, and supportive principal leadership are strategic factors in improving teacher performance. This study concludes that improving teacher performance will be more optimal if schools are able to build a culture of open communication and implement leadership that encourages teacher motivation and professionalism.
