Abstract

The research was to find out the students’ ability and students difficulties in performing hotel receptionist. This research was conducted at phase E Hospitality Department in SMK Negeri 6 Padang, the academic year 2023/2024. The students had three problems, there were lack of pronunciation, lack of grammar, and lack vocabulary. Based on those problems, the researcher analyzed students’ speaking ability in performing as hotel receptionist at Phase E Hospitality Department in SMK Negeri 6 Padang. The method of the research used is descriptive research. The population was 108 students from 3 classes, which are X PH 1, X PH 2, and X PH 3. In this case, X PH 3 was chosen as the research sample that consists of 36 students and the researcher used a sample random sampling technique. The research instrument used was a speaking test. In data collection technique the opportunity to perform as hotel receptionist in front of the class, while the data analysis technique is carried out by using speaking indicators. Based on the result to speaking test the researcher found that of the 28 of 36 are students present during the research process because 8 are students permission for its own reasons was and the researcher to find that the average of students has a moderate speaking ability indication of 60% in class X PH 3. Through these result find students difficulties in speaking, they are miss pronunciation, mastering grammar, and vocabulary. The researcher concluded the students speaking ability in performing as hotel receptionist was moderate.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze students' speaking ability through the use of the Information Gap technique in grade XI IPA students of SMA Ekasakti Padang. The background of this study is based on the fact that many students still experience difficulties in speaking English due to the fear of making mistakes and the lack of effective teaching strategies. This study focused on determining students' speaking ability using the Information Gap technique, identifying its strengths and weaknesses, and understanding the problems faced by students when speaking. The method used was descriptive with a quantitative approach, with a population of nine students, but only six took the speaking test due to health problems. Data were collected through speaking tests and analyzed using average and percentage formulas. The results showed that students' speaking ability through the Information Gap technique was classified as good with an average score of 75, although the main obstacle faced by students lay in the aspect of speaking fluency which obtained the lowest score compared to other aspects.

Abstract

Speaking is a communicative and repetitive activity supported by simple structure and clear meaning. This study aimed to identify speaking difficulties among second-semester students of the English Department at FKIP Universitas Ekasakti. The main problems found were lack of pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. The research used a descriptive quantitative method. The population consisted of 11 students, and total sampling was applied, meaning all students participated. A speaking test was used as the research instrument. Students were asked to perform in front of the class, and their speaking abilities were analyzed using specific speaking indicators.The results showed that out of 11 students, 1 student achieved a very good level, 8 students were in the good category, and 2 students were in the average category. The overall average score was 76, indicating that students’ speaking ability, especially in interactive speaking through group discussion, was at a good level.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze students' difficulties in speaking English through conversation at Ekasakti High School, Padang. Speaking is a very important language skill in supporting communication; however, many students still experience difficulties in expressing ideas orally in English. This study used a descriptive research design. The study population was all nine grade XI IPS students at Ekasakti High School, Padang, and all of them were used as a sample (total sampling). The research instrument was a speaking test in the form of an English conversation on the topic "Environmental Cleanliness". The assessment of students' speaking ability was based on five components: comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency. Data were analyzed using average scores and percentages. The results showed that the average score of students' speaking ability was 56.6%, which is categorized as moderate. The main difficulties faced by students were limited vocabulary, pronunciation errors, and anxiety when speaking.
