Abstract

Kurikulum merupakan seperangkat sistem rencana yang terdiri dari tujuan, materi, strategi pembelajaran, organisasi dan evaluasi dalam aktifitas pembelajaran sedangkan metode merupakan bagian dan strategi instruksional untuk menyajikan, menguraikan, memberi contoh dan latihan kepada siswa dalam mencapai tujuan pembelajaran. Keduanya harus berjalan beriringan demi keberhasilan proses belajar mengajar tidak hanya pada pendidikan formal tetapi juga pada pendidikan non-formal. Kiddos English School (KES) dan KUMON adalah dua lembaga pendidikan non-formal yang memiliki kurikulum dan metode pembelajaran bahasa Inggris yang berbeda. Berdasarkan hasil pengamatan langsung di lapangan diketahui bahwa KES menerapkan kurikulum Merdeka PAUD dengan menerapkan metode Beyond Centre and Circle Time dan KUMON menggunakan kurikulum Pengembangan Metode KUMON dalam pelaksanaan pendidikannya melalui metode Self-Directed Learning. Dalam pelaksanaan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, KES menjadikan para siswa sebagai sasaran dari proses pembelajaran sesuai dengan minat dan bakat mereka sedangkan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di KUMON siswa belajar melalui latihan yang berkelanjutan. Kedua metode pembelajaran yang diimplementasikan memiliki kekurangan dan kelebihan namun secara umum kekurangan yang dimiliki dapat ditutupi dengan kelebihannya. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan pencapaian kemampuan bahasa Inggris dari peserta didik yang menempuh pendidikan di kedua tempat tersebut.Kata kunci: Kurikulum, pendidikan non-formal, pembelajaran bahasa InggrisCurriculum is a set of planning systems consisting of objectives, materials, learning strategies, organization and evaluation in learning activities while method is the instructional parts and strategies for presenting, explaining, giving examples and exercises to students in achieving learning goals. Both must go hand in hand for the success of the teaching and learning process not only in formal education but also in non-formal. Kiddos English School (KES) and KUMON are two non-formal educational institutions in Banda Aceh which have different curricula and method in English language learning. Based on the results of direct observations, it is found that KES implements the Merdeka PAUD curriculum by applying the Beyond Centre and Circle Time method while KUMON uses the KUMON Method Development curriculum in implementing its education through Self-Directed Learning method. In implementing the English language learning, KES directs the students as the target of the learning process according to their talents and interests and learning English at KUMON the students learn through continuous practice. These two-learning methods implementation have advantages and disadvantages yet in general the disadvantages can be solved by some advantages. This is proven by the evidence from the achievement of English language skills of students studying in those both places.Keywords: Curriculum, non-formal education, English language learning

Abstract

The problems faced by students at SDN 1 Lhok Kuala Baro in writing English poetry are caused by limited in vocabulary mastery. The application of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) which involves the relationship between written themes and students’ daily experiences is assumed to make it easier for those to put together words and compose sentences. This study aims to describes the effectiveness of using this learning model and also aims to see the development of poetry writing skills toward the grade fourth students in SDN Lhok Kuala Baro. Data were collected through test and observations of 27 students and then analyzed descriptively using percentage techniques and the N-Gain test. The results obtained were that before the implementation of CTL only 16.6% students had achieved good score but after the implementation, the completion had increased to 76.9%. Meanwhile, the N-Gain test results showed an average of 0.571 with an increase of 57.1%, indicating the effectiveness of CTL in improving students’ writing skills. These findings shows that CTL can significantly improve students’ mastery, improve their imagination in expressing ideas and skilled in arranging words.Key words: Contextual Teaching Learning, Poetry Writing Skills
