Abstract

This study aims to explore the perspectives of teachers and students on the use of Duolingo for vocabulary learning. The research was conducted at Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri 4 Tanjungpinang on November 8, 2024. The respondents of this study included one teacher and thirty students from Class Eleven Two Point Two, selected to represent perceptions and the effectiveness of using the Duolingo application. The method employed in this study was a descriptive quantitative approach. Data were collected through questionnaires. The findings revealed that some teachers and students were either unaware of the application or familiar with it but did not use it. One teacher stated that the main reason for not using the application was having never heard of Duolingo before. Additionally, sixty-six point seven percent of student respondents reported that they had never used the application, while thirty-three point three percent indicated they had used it. However, there is a notable interest among students in trying the application in the near future and a willingness to learn using Duolingo if implemented by teachers in the classroom. The conclusion of this study is that, although the teacher and the majority of student respondents had not used the application, they expressed openness and optimism about its potential.

Abstract

Kegiatan Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN) Kelompok 30 Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji dilangsungkan di Desa Sebong Lagoi dengan tema “Daun Pepaya Senjata Hijau Lawan Hama” yang berfokus pada penyuluhan serta praktik pembuatan pestisida berbahan alami. Alasan diadakannya kegiatan ini adalah untuk mengatasi isu yang dihadapi oleh petani yang masih bergantung pada pestisida kimia, yang berdampak buruk bagi tanah, tanaman, lingkungan, serta biaya produksi. Melalui pendekatan observasi, diskusi, dan praktik langsung, mahasiswa berperan sebagai penghubung untuk memperkenalkan pemanfaatan daun pepaya sebagai cara alternatif dalam mengendalikan hama secara ramah lingkungan. Hasil dari kegiatan ini memperlihatkan adanya peningkatan pemahaman dan keterampilan masyarakat mengenai pembuatan dan penggunaan pestisida nabati. Warga menunjukkan minat yang tinggi, ikut berperan aktif dalam praktik, dan mengungkapkan keinginan untuk menggunakan pestisida alami karena lebih terjangkau, mudah didapatkan, serta aman bagi lingkungan. Dengan cara ini, program ini tidak hanya menawarkan solusi terhadap masalah hama, tetapi juga membantu mewujudkan sistem pertanian yang berkelanjutan, sehat, dan ramah lingkungan, sekaligus memperkuat kontribusi nyata dari perguruan tinggi dalam memberdayakan masyarakat desa. Selain itu, kegiatan ini juga selaras dengan tujuan Kuliah Kerja Nyata yaitu membangun masyarakat kepulauan melalui pemanfaatan ilmu pengetahuan, teknologi, dan nilai-nilai budaya, meningkatkan kemampuan kepemimpinan serta kerja sama mahasiswa lintas disiplin, serta mencari solusi atas permasalahan pembangunan masyarakat desa secara berkelanjutan.

Abstract

Teaching media design is a crucial competence for English Language Education students, as it requires the integration of pedagogical understanding, content knowledge, and practical instructional skills. This study aims to analyze the quality of teaching media designed by undergraduate students and to examine the challenges they faced during the media design process. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the study involved students of the English Language Education Department at Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji who had completed the English Language Teaching Media course. Data were collected through document analysis of conventional and technology-based teaching media, questionnaires administered to 41 students, and semi-structured interviews with eight selected participants. The findings indicate that the overall quality of student-designed teaching media was categorized as good, particularly in terms of visual appeal, material relevance, and basic practicality. However, notable challenges were identified in aligning media with learning objectives, ensuring efficiency and ease of implementation, and fostering meaningful student engagement. The study further reveals a gap between students’ technical and aesthetic strengths and their pedagogical and practical competencies. These findings highlight the need for more balanced instructional support that emphasizes instructional alignment, efficiency, and learner-centered design. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of teaching media design in English Language Education and provides pedagogical implications for improving media design courses in teacher education programs.
