Abstract

Differences in logging intensity, forestfires and forest encroachment have caused the variability of natural forest conditions, including its horizontal and vertical stand structures. Information on stand structure variability and dynamic of secondary forests is essential for projecting the future stand structure, which can be used to develop forest management plan. This study, which used 109 permanent sample plots data established on low and dry-land logged over natural forests in Kalimantan, showed that there was an obvious variability of the stand conditions after logging in terms of the trees number per hectare and horizontal stand structures.

Abstract

Dynamics of stand structure (DST), which could indicate the growth performance of logged-over forests, may vary depending on various factors, e.g. stand density, initial stand structure, species composition, time after logging, and environmental factors (rainfall, elevation, etc.). The variations of such factors could result in the variations of DST’s components (e.g. proportion of trees upgrowth and staying). However, this study, which used 75 permanent sample plots data of lowland and dryland natural forests in Kalimantan, showed that the proportion of trees upgrowth and staying could not be predicted satisfactorily using the number of trees, stand basal area, time after logging, and elevation as independent variables in multiple linear regression models. The regression models produced unrealistic projections of stand structures. In contrast, the projection of stand structures using the DST’s components that were calculated using arithmetic mean was better than that of the regression models.

Abstract

Line intersect method (LIM) emerged as one of the effective and efficient post-harvesting assessment methods. LIM was being widely used to estimate logging residue of plantation forest in the temperate zone. This method has not been used in tropical forest plantations, including teak forests. The study was carried out to determine the best design of LIM for assessing logging residue in the teak plantation. The circular and rectangular plot was used in this study.  A hundred percent logging residue inventory was carried out on each plot.  Then, one and combination of two and three line intersects per plot were placed on each plot. Bias, precision and accuracy criteria were calculated in order to compare the designs. The study found that estimation of logging residue volume using LIM was biased and tended to overestimate. LIM design with two lines combination per plot was the best design for assessing logging residue of the teak plantation.

Abstract

Form factors and volume models are often be used in the estimation of tree volumes. However, a few studies have developed and evaluated the accuracy of form factors and volume models for estimating tree volumes of community forests. This study aimed to formulate form factors and volume models and assess their prediction accuracy for estimating tree bole volumes of mahogany at community forests in Central Java. This study used 120 sample trees with diameters of 6–38 cm to formulate artificial and absolute form factors and to develop tree bole volume models. These form factors coupled with bole height and total height were used in simple volume equations. Regression analyses were used to develop volume models using the diameter and total height as predictors. The simple volume equations and volume models' prediction accuracy was evaluated using a cross-validation dataset and independent dataset (30 sample trees). The artificial form factor (0.68 ± 0.11) of mahogany, which was higher than the absolute form factor (0.46 ± 0.09), provided accurate estimates of tree bole volumes when it was used with the bole height instead of the total height. The volume model that uses diameter and total height produced the most accurate estimates, while the volume model that uses diameter alone provided the most practical yet reliable tool for estimating tree bole volumes of mahogany. The results of this study are useful for improving community forest management.

Abstract

Abstract

Biomass estimation of secondary forests is required to support the emission reduction of carbon dioxide through an enhancement of forest carbon stocks. Commonly, forest biomass is indirectly estimated using tree biomass allometric models that are developed based on a destructive sampling of sample trees. The availability of biomass allometric models for secondary forests in Indonesia is still limited, particularly for secondary forest ecosystems in eastern Indonesia. This study aimed to develop allometric biomass models for mixed-species trees in a secondary forest of East Halmahera, North Maluku, and to compare their accuracies with some other allometric biomass models that commonly used for estimating biomass of secondary forests. The tree biomass measurement was conducted by using a destructive sampling of 18 mixed-species trees (with diameter range of 5,4 – 36,9 cm) in a secondary forest. The samples of each tree component (stem, branch, twig, and leaf) were analyzed in a laboratory to determine the biomass of each sample tree. Allometric models were developed by using a non-linear regression analysis, which were then compared with other allometric models. This study revealed that the biomass of mixed-species trees in the study area could be estimated accurately using the M7 model that used diameter, height, and wood density variables. Such local allometric model was more accurate than other allometric models commonly used for estimating tropical forest biomass. Alternatively, the M3 model that used diameter and height variables could also be used when wood density data was not available. The local allometric models from this study can enrich the availability of biomass allometric models for secondary forest ecosystems in eastern Indonesia. Abstract

Kabesak (Acacia leucophloea) is a particular plant species and recognized to have important benefits tothe local people of Timor Island. The people of Timor Island use kabesak leaves as animal feed in the dry season and kabesak wood is used as building materials and furniture. The purpose of this study wasto determine the stand and site characteristics ofkabesak in the western region of Timor, Indonesia. The means of density, frequency, dominance, and importance value index were analyzed. The results showed kabesak stand structure in secondary forest land, grassland, and shrubs, as well as garden showed the J-inverted shaped, which implies that natural regeneration was a proper continuation. Kabesak had significant associations with a few plants’ species, both negative and positive types. The result of regression analysis of the principal components showedthat the contribution of edaphic factor influencesthe population density of kabesak.Silt fraction and phosphorus content were found tohave the highest positive effect on the density, while sand fraction and sodium content were found to havethe highestnegative effectsof kabesak. A test for altitude with Tukey test (α = 0.05) reveals that kabesak from 0-300 m a.s.l., 300-600 m. asl., 600-900 m a.s.l. werenot different from each other, while altitude >900 m a.s.l. was significantly different from the other groups.

Abstract
