Abstract

This paper establishes the lexical density and readability levels of the Duolingo guidance textbook, with the view of establishing further the accessibility levels that the textbook has for use in language learning by users. Qualitative content analysis was conducted on 10 segments of the guidance text; lexical density was determined through content word proportions analyzed and readability by the Flesch Reading Ease formula. The results ranged between 47.6% and 56.1% for lexical density, while for nouns, just one word class, the most frequent class of words for all observed segments was 24.9-32.5%. Scores for readability ranged from 53.21 to 85.2. For example, "How to Test Your Best" sections obtained very high readability scores of 85.2, whereas sections more suited to the content, such as "Reading Texts", scored as low as 53.21. Further analysis then showed that there indeed was a strategic range in the section's complexity: the technical content was generally higher in lexical density and low in readability scores, while practical guidance sections maintained higher accessibility. Given this is the conclusion, recommendations go to Duolingo on adding extra scaffolding mechanisms for complex parts by developing supplemental material at different proficiencies, including adaptive learning whereby the complexity of the content would change based on performance. Also, periodic assessment of textual complexity across different versions guarantees that users are uniformly having their experience across the world. The current study added to the cognition of how digital language learning materials balance the issues of accessibility and educational effectiveness

Abstract

This study examines the phonetic and stylistic elements of "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen, a song renowned for its distinctive structure and complex themes. It redirects attention from the previously explored cultural, narrative, and biographical elements to investigate the overlooked phonological characteristics that contribute to its aesthetic and emotional resonance. Employing a qualitative methodology, the song’s lyrics were transcribed phonetically using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) to identify dominant consonants and vowels. The results indicate that consonants such as /d/, /s/, /l/, and /n/, along with vowels such as /ɪ/, /ə/, and /aɪ/, play a crucial role in defining the sound quality of the lyrics. These phonological features enhance the song's musicality while emphasizing its narrative tension and emotional depth. The interplay of these sounds creates a dynamic auditory experience that aligns with the song’s shifting emotional landscapes. The study concludes that the phonological elements in Bohemian Rhapsody function as integral carriers of meaning, enriching its thematic and emotional layers. This research bridges linguistic analysis with musical narrative, demonstrating how phono-stylistics can uncover the deeper aspects of iconic musical texts and fostering interdisciplinary dialogue in linguistics, musicology, and cultural studies. The findings imply that similar approaches can be applied to other complex musical compositions, opening new avenues for analyzing the interplay between language and music in various cultural contexts

Abstract

This paper investigates the interpersonal functions in the discourse of the Berkeley Exec Ed podcast, specifically the episode "The Science of Happiness & the Greater Good," using the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) framework. It explores how language functions in interaction, conveys information, and entertains the audience by applying speech functions and mood types. A qualitative approach is used to analyze clause separations in the podcast transcript, which are then categorized based on speech functions—such as statements, questions, commands, and offers—and their corresponding moods: declarative, interrogative, and imperative. Most of the interactions (58.1%) are realized through statements using declarative moods. This trend indicates that the hosts aim to present information in a manner that is authoritative and informative, thereby building credibility and trust. Other functions include questioning (11.6%) and inviting (16.3%), which utilize interrogative and imperative moods, respectively, to encourage audience participation and engagement. This strategic interplay of linguistic elements demonstrates how speech functions and mood types contribute to the dynamism, interactivity, and effectiveness of the podcast discourse. The study highlights the crucial role of interpersonal language functions in fostering meaningful connections and maintaining audience interest in podcast formats. It also offers insights that can inform broader practices in media communication and content creation
