Abstract

Mastery of speaking skills in learning Arabic often faces challenges related to student engagement and the effectiveness of traditional teaching methods. Conventional teaching methods are usually considered less attractive and unable to meet the learning needs of students effectively. This study aims to explore the use of multimedia based on a cognitive approach to improving students' speaking skills in the Special Arabic Language Learning Program (PKPBA) UIN Malang. Qualitative research methods were used, involving in-depth observations and interviews with students and faculty to collect data on the experience and impact of multimedia use. The results showed that multimedia designed with a cognitive approach significantly improved students' speaking skills, increased motivation, and enriched the learning experience. These findings make an important contribution to cognitive theory by demonstrating the practical application of multimedia in language learning, as well as providing guidance for educators in designing more effective learning materials. This research also emphasizes the need for inclusive technology development, attention to ethics, and the protection of users' data.   Keywords: Speaking Skills, Multimedia, Cognitive

Abstract

The professional development of Arabic language teachers is a strategic priority in Islamic educational institutions to ensure instructional quality and pedagogical relevance. This study investigates the implementation of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) strategies in enhancing teacher competence at Al-Mashduqiah Islamic Boarding School, Probolinggo. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through interviews with caregivers and teachers, classroom observations, and analysis of institutional documents. The findings reveal that Arabic language teachers at the pesantren demonstrate four core competencies pedagogical, professional, personal, and social as mandated by national education standards. CPD at Al-Mashduqiah is systematically implemented through self-development programs, scientific publications, and innovative instructional practices. Supporting factors include a conducive Arabic-speaking environment, regular training sessions, and the integration of Arabic in daily communication. However, challenges such as high teacher workload, limited technological integration, and external teaching assignments persist. This study concludes that the CPD model at Al-Mashduqiah offers a viable and sustainable framework for enhancing Arabic language teacher competence and serves as a reference for similar Islamic educational settings aiming to strengthen professional teaching capacity.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how digital media mediates the transformative learning process in Arabic language learning at MAN 1 Jember using the perspective of Jack Mezirow’s transformative learning theory. This study used a qualitative approach with a single-classroom case-study design and a descriptive-interpretive orientation. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and analysis of digital learning artifacts. The results show that digital media functions as an epistemic mediator, raising disorienting dilemmas, facilitating critical reflection, strengthening reflective dialogue, and supporting the reconstruction of students’ frames of reference. Digital mediation encourages a shift in students’ understanding of Arabic from a structural subject to contextual, social, and meaning-oriented language practices. Theoretically, this study enriches Mezirow’s framework by emphasizing the role of digital, multimodal cues in meaning reconstruction. Pedagogically, these findings provide a foundation for the development of digital-based Arabic language learning that is reflective and transformative.
