Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of using Google Translate as a tool to teach recount text writing to EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students in the second grade of MTs At-Thohiriyah, a junior high school in Jember, East Java, Indonesia. The study, conducted using a qualitative descriptive approach, analyzed data collected through classroom observations, interviews with teachers and students, and document analysis. The findings revealed that Google Translate was an effective tool for teaching recount text writing, helping students understand the structure of recount texts, expand vocabulary, improve grammatical accuracy, and increase motivation and interest in learning. The study also explored the challenges and limitations of using Google Translate in language learning and provided recommendations for educators seeking to integrate technology into their language teaching practices.

Abstract

Menulis cerita pendek merupakan sarana ekspresi yang tidak hanya mengembangkan imajinasi dan kemampuan berbahasa, tetapi juga memperkuat peran guru sebagai teladan literasi. Namun, berbagai hambatan seperti keterbatasan waktu, beban kerja, dan kurangnya pelatihan menulis menyebabkan banyak guru merasa kurang percaya diri dalam menulis. Menanggapi kondisi tersebut, kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat berupa Workshop Menulis Guru dilaksanakan di SMA Ar-Rohmah Putri, Malang. Program ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kompetensi dan kepercayaan diri guru dalam menulis cerpen melalui pendekatan sistematis dan suportif. Kegiatan dilaksanakan dalam tiga tahap: persiapan, pelaksanaan, dan evaluasi/refleksi, serta diikuti oleh 37 guru. Metode yang digunakan adalah workshop partisipatif dan reflektif yang disertai pendampingan intensif dan umpan balik konstruktif. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan dalam pemahaman teknik menulis cerpen dan antusiasme guru dalam berkarya, yang dibuktikan melalui penerbitan antologi cerpen karya guru. Pelatihan ini juga mendorong terciptanya budaya literasi yang positif di lingkungan sekolah. Keberhasilan program ini menunjukkan bahwa pendampingan menulis dapat menjadi strategi efektif dalam memberdayakan guru sebagai agen literasi yang inspiratif.

Abstract

Bantengan Art is a traditional performance art originating from Malang, East Java. This art form combines dance, music, poetry, and attractions that depict the battle between good and evil through the symbol of the bull. In addition to serving as a ritual to ward off misfortune and purify the village, this art also functions as entertainment and as a means of preserving the local cultural traditions of Malang. This study aims to describe the existence and symbolic meaning of Bantengan Art in Malang. The research is qualitative in nature. The approach used to address the issues employs Parson’s theory of existence and Mead’s theory of symbolic interactionism. The data consist of informant statements and Bantengan performances. Data collection techniques include interviews and field observations during performances. The results show that Bantengan Art not only survives amid the current of modernization but also adapts through innovations in music, costumes, and performance media. Bantengan Art continues to hold strong social, spiritual, and cultural functions and serves as a collective space to strengthen values of solidarity, local identity, and the preservation of traditional cultural heritage in Malang. Symbolic elements such as the bull figure, trance performances, and traditional musical accompaniment are interpreted as representations of strength, courage, and spiritual communication between humans and their ancestors. Thus, Bantengan Art is not merely entertainment, but a cultural legacy rich in meaning, a representation of cultural identity, and a medium to strengthen social bonds within the Malang community. Keywords: Bantengan art, existence, symbolic meaning, tradition, local culture Malang

Abstract

This study aims to describe the planning, development, and feasibility of interactive e-modules for writing short stories. The method used is the Research and Development (R&D) model of Borg and Gall which is simplified into seven stages. The research subjects included material experts, media experts, teachers, and grade XI students, with data collection through interviews, questionnaires, and observations that were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The results of the study showed that interactive e-modules based on prophetic literature were effective in overcoming students' obstacles in writing short stories and limited learning resources, and were declared very feasible based on the validation of material experts (95.45%), media experts (95%), practitioners (93.25%), and field tests (86.44%). This e-module contributes to improving writing skills while shaping students' character through the integration of humanization, liberation, and transcendence values, making it relevant as a source of innovative learning in the 21st century. AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan perencanaan, pengembangan, dan kelayakan e-modul interaktif menulis cerita pendek. Metode yang digunakan adalah Research and Development (R&D) model Borg dan Gall yang disederhanakan menjadi tujuh tahap. Subjek penelitian meliputi ahli materi, ahli media, guru, dan siswa kelas XI, dengan pengumpulan data melalui wawancara, angket, dan observasi yang dianalisis secara kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa e-modul interaktif berbasis sastra profetik efektif mengatasi kendala siswa dalam menulis cerpen dan keterbatasan sumber belajar, serta dinyatakan sangat layak berdasarkan validasi ahli materi (95,45%), ahli media (95%), praktisi (93,25%), dan uji lapangan (86,44%). E-modul ini berkontribusi dalam meningkatkan keterampilan menulis sekaligus membentuk karakter siswa melalui integrasi nilai humanisasi, liberasi, dan transendensi, sehingga relevan sebagai sumber pembelajaran inovatif abad ke-21.
