Abstract

Indonesia is one of the countries with tropical climate. Hot conditions, humid air and high rainfall require architectural solutions that are responsive to the climate. It is common in Indonesia to use the concept of tropical architecture. Santo Fransiskus Asisi Catholic Church, Padang Bulan is one of the buildings that applies tropical architecture. This building is located in Medan Selayang sub-district and uses several applications of tropical architecture as a solution to problems in tropical climates. This research aims to see the extent to which tropical architecture is applied in this church building. The method used is descriptive explanatory, which describes the parts of the space and building with its response to the tropical climate. The results show some applications of tropical architecture in this building, such as the use of ventilation, sloping roofs, terraces and the use of local materials.

Abstract

Green architecture, also known as sustainable architecture, is a concept in architecture that has characteristics and focuses on environmentally friendly architecture. The important points of green architecture include minimising the consumption of natural resources, energy efficiency, wise and sustainable use of water, and non-polluting and recyclable materials. In educational buildings, the concept of green architecture is very important to use, not only to reduce emissions and global warming, but also because green architecture significantly influences the performance or comfort of people inside when learning. The purpose of this study is to understand how the concept of green architecture is applied in the buildings of the Polytechnic of Chemical Industry Technology (PTKI) campus in Medan. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method, which involves describing or explaining existing conditions in the field through analysis and extensive discussion to identify results and conclusions. The application of green architecture in buildings is assessed using the Green Building Council Indonesia (GBCI) green architecture indicators. The findings of this study indicate that the PTKI campus meets three main GBCI green architecture indicators: appropriate land use, material sources and cycles, and air quality and comfort.

Abstract

The development of urban areas is essentially the result of a dynamic interaction between regulations and the growth of the community. One such regulatory instrument is the Building and Environmental Layout Plan (RTBL). The RTBL serves as a guide and control mechanism for development, ensuring that the arrangement of buildings and the environment in selected areas meets criteria for sustainable planning. The T.B. Simatupang–Pinang Baris–Kampung Lalang Intersection corridor in the Medan Sunggal District is a secondary arterial road in Medan City that plays a crucial role in balancing the city's overall growth. Identifying urban design elements is essential to creating an urban plan that reinforces Medan City's distinctive character and identity. This study identifies elements and formulates recommendations for the RTBL of the T.B. Simatupang–Pinang Baris–Kampung Lalang Intersection corridor in Medan Sunggal District, utilizing an approach based on Hamid Shirvani’s urban design theories. The research identifies eight urban design elements and provides recommendations that can be incorporated into the Medan City RTBL document for this specific corridor area.

Abstract

Urban parks serve an important social dan ecological function as public spaces for active and passive recreation. Taman Cadika, located in Medan Johor Sub-district, Medan City, is one such urban park whose jogging track and sport area zone has degraded due to insufficient maintenance, resulting in damaged pavement, unmaintained vegetation, deteriorating furniture, and disorganized pedestrian-cyclist circulation. This study aims to formulate a revitalization plan for the jogging track and sport area zone of Taman Cadika through a forest-based design concept that restores the ecological, social, and aesthetic functions of the park. A descriptive qualitative case-study method was used, combining field observation, documentation, and comparative studies with Tebet Eco Park (Jakarta) and Taman Bunga Nusantara (West Java) as benchmark references. The results identify five critical sub-zones requiring intervention: the pedestrian zone, the central zone, the lakeside zone, the prayer room-toilet-parking zone, and the sports zone. The proposed design concept integrates a well-structured jogging track equipped with directional signage, thematic garden benches, an adventure track, and park lighting, supported by shade-tree planting following the urban forest approach. The findings are expected to serve as a reference for local government and park managers in improving the quality and sustainability of public green open space in Medan.

Abstract

The Medan Post Office is a heritage building that remains in operation today. It was constructed under the Dutch East Indies government between 1909 and 1911, designed by Dutch architect Ir. Simon Snuyf, and once symbolized the economic advancement of colonial-era Medan. Standing in the Kesawan heritage district, the building reflects Functional Modern architecture, known locally as Geometric Art Deco, and is closely tied to the growth of the tobacco plantation trade and the colonial transportation infrastructure that supported it. This study aims to trace the history of the building, identify its architectural style and characteristics, and examine it through a semiotic-code approach, namely the study of signs bound to the social codes through which meaning is collectively understood. Primary data were obtained through field surveys of the building and interviews with its management and surrounding community, complemented by secondary data from journals, print media, and reputable online sources. Findings show that the building's hermeneutic, semantic, symbolic, proairetic, and cultural codes, together with its aesthetic qualities of unity, balance, proportion, and heroic scale, continue to define its identity as a colonial-era landmark, now adaptively reused as the creative hub Pos Bloc Medan.

Abstract

Early childhood education requires a learning environment that is safe, comfortable, engaging, and responsive to children's characteristics. Salsabila Kindergarten in Pematang Serai Village, Tanjung Pura District, Langkat Regency, is one such facility requiring a learning space that adequately supports children's educational activities. This community service activity aimed to develop a classroom design suited to early childhood learning needs and to document the building's condition after construction. The method involved a design process and consultation with the kindergarten management in 2010, with the resulting design later used as a reference for construction. In 2023, documentation was carried out on the completed and functioning building. Results show that the proposed design was successfully implemented while retaining its key characteristics, including a symmetrical façade composition, geometric forms, bright colors, an emphasized entrance area, and openings through doors and windows. Post-construction observations indicate that the classroom is actively used as a learning facility, equipped with supporting materials for children's activities. These findings demonstrate that architectural design considering both function and user characteristics can help create a more engaging and appropriate learning environment for early childhood education.
