Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of utilizing Billy Collins' poem Introduction to Poetry as a pedagogical tool to cultivate reader response and critical thinking skills in the context of literature and education. By conducting a qualitative analysis of students' interpretations and reactions, the research aims to elucidate how poetry can facilitate connections between personal experience and academic analysis. Data were collected through student surveys and reflective essays, revealing that engagement with the poem through the lens of reader-response theory significantly helped students bridge the gap between personal meaning-making and academic interpretation. The findings suggest that such engagement not only fosters a deeper connection to the text but also enhances students' critical thinking and emotional literacy. Many students demonstrated improved abilities to analyze the poem critically while also reflecting on their emotional responses, confirming that poetry can promote more individualized and reflective learning outcomes. Furthermore, this study explores the broader pedagogical role of literature in education, with findings indicating that literature, particularly poetry, plays a vital role in developing students' critical thinking and self-reflection skills. Overall, the integration of poetry into the curriculum demonstrates its pedagogical significance in fostering both intellectual and emotional growth in students.

Abstract

This article examines the construction and negotiation of queer masculinities in Southeast Asian cinema through a comparative analysis of The Iron Ladies (dir. Yongyoot Thongkongtoon, Thailand, 2000), Arisan! (dir. Nia Dinata, Indonesia, 2003), and Die Beautiful (dir. Jun Lana, Philippines, 2016). While dominant regional representations of masculinity have been shaped by heteronormative, patriarchal, and nationalist ideologies, these films offer alternative portrayals that challenge and reconfigure normative gender and sexual identities. Drawing on Edward Said’s postcolonial critique of representation and José Esteban Muñoz’s theory of disidentification, this study employs qualitative textual analysis to investigate how queer male identities are represented within specific cultural and national contexts. The findings reveal that queer masculinities in these films are articulated through strategies of disidentification, performance, and resistance, negotiating visibility and belonging without fully conforming to or rejecting dominant norms. Each film reflects the particular socio-political tensions of its national context, while simultaneously disrupting Western-centric or Orientalist constructions of queerness. Ultimately, this study demonstrates how Southeast Asian cinema functions as a critical space for reimagining queer identity and masculinity beyond colonial and heteronormative frameworks.

Abstract

This article analyzes the cultural significance of the theme song of Si Doel Anak Sekolahan using an ethnomusicological approach, specifically focusing on the representation of Betawi society. The main problem addressed is how the song's lyrics reflect the identity, values, and social changes of the Betawi people within an urban context. Additionally, this study explores how music functions as a form of cultural storytelling, representing the daily experiences and social dynamics of the Betawi community. This research aims to understand the role of music as a medium of cultural expression that mirrors social realities while preserving cultural identity in the face of modernization. The method used is a qualitative lyrical text analysis to identify prominent cultural themes. The findings reveal that the lyrics are not merely entertainment but also a means to reinforce community identity and reflect complex social dynamics.
