Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the narrative model used in The Satanic Verses novel by Salman Rusdhie as a writing strategy. The analysis shows that, in telling his narration, Rusdhie uses a hidden narrator as an actor who significantly controls the story and, in this way, magical realism is purposely employed to convey his messages. This narrative model produces a reading that the novel is offering a discourse of 'doubt' as an alternative over the text's single interpretation

Abstract

Studies on the Ammatowa indigenous people have been carried out by several researchers. Unfortunately, none of these studies have focused on the role and position of women in the Ammatowa people, both in their daily lives and in regard  to education. Therefore, this study fills that void. This study aims to identify the position and role of women in the life of the Ammatowa people; what specific roles are performed by women in customary areas; and how the traditions are still firmly held provide space for women to express themselves. As a study of a unique community, this study uses an ethnographic approach, by collecting, classifying, and analyzing the various positions of women in the Ammatowa Kajang community. In the traditional structure of Tana Towa, women have an important, strategic and respected position. In the structure of these customs, there is an important role played by a woman called Angrota who has the task and responsibility of preparing all the needs for traditional ceremonies, facilitating the selection of Ammatowa and inaugurating them. In the economic aspect, women have an important role in supporting the family’s financial, such as weaving, selling in the market, and farming. Meanwhile, education for Tana Towa women is still a major issue that needs serious attention. It is because the education world is related to issues of customs, and the family economy.

Abstract

This paper aims to show the dynamics of the Indonesian - Malaysian border area in Sebatik Island, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Take into account as a background is the territorial dispute between Indonesia and Malaysia over the Ligitan and Sipadan Islands which were awarded to Malaysia by the decision of the ICJ (International Court of Justice) in 2002, which was followed by the dispute over the Ambalat sea block in 2005. Sebatik Island is geographically very strategic since it faces the disputed areas. Therefore the concerns of the Indonesian state with regard to the island pertain to issues of nation-state sovereignty and territorial security, which she tries to safeguard through intensive campaigns. Research conducted in Sebatik in 2009 showed how people willingly reinforced the state by incorporating its programs, despite their ambiguous position as people in a border area, which support they used subsequently in negotiating with the state for their own local purpose.

Abstract

Abstract: In this era of independent learning there are many learning resources that can be used as a vehicle for knowledge, including literary works, especially literary works in the form of poetry. Literary work is a mimesis of the real world, so its existence can inspire students to live life. This study discusses the construction of urban society in a collection of poems entitled "Wong Kam Pung" by F. Aziz Manna. Meanwhile, the poems studied are summarized in the subtitles Docks, Bridges, Hotels and People Who Don't Want to Get Old, Ngelindur, and Bumi Tua. This study uses Peter L. Berger and Luckman's perspective on social construction with the aim of seeing how the construction presented in the form of the subject I lyrics in the poem relates to urban space, especially the position of urban space in the meaning that is present through the subject I lyrics. The results of the study show that there is an urban community construction displayed through the subject of lyrics, namely: sub-urban identity construction, lifestyle construction and ecological construction in the time period. From these findings the position of meaning that is developed through the construction presented redefines how urban space is positioned as the subject of lyrics in the poem. The results of this study are expected to inspire the younger generation in moving forward through life tomorrow. Abstract

Since its inauguration in 2007, the development of Bungkul Park has been very conspicuous from a tomb to a tourist attraction. As a historical place, Bungkul Park is not as famous as Wali Songo. Geographically, the tomb of Sunan Bungkul and the green open space's Bungkul border the wall to distinguish the location's layout. This place is better known as a recreational place. Changes in function are more creative than religious. This study tries to answer (1) How is the Sacred culture that occurs in religious tourism? (2) How is the Profan culture in the bungkul ParkPark? (3) What is the impact of cultural differences in religious tourism in Sunan Bungkul and Bungkul Park? These problems are explained by analyzing the data and sources obtained through the stages of qualitative descriptive research methods, which include ethnography, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Based on the data analysis and sources received, the development of Bungkul Park, which is getting better, brings the Surabaya city government to revitalize Bungkul Park. The City Government should pay more attention to the religious aspect than the profane aspect of using Bungkul. This is because of Bungkul's care, most of which pays more attention to the ParkPark than his burial. Visitors are also more familiar with the ParkPark than bungkul's tomb.

Abstract

This study explores the context of identity in the musical arts echoed by a Black Metal band from Kediri, Immortal Rites. Aesthetically, Immortal Rites articulate Javanese locality using Black Metal, a sub-genre of underground music that emerged in Indonesia in the late 90s. Accordingly, the band lined up as one of the Kejawen Black Metal whose consistency and depth of understanding are well appreciated within the scene. The unification of two different cultures provokes a complex contemporary value of a cultural reflection concerning identity. This study uses a qualitative research method with a descriptive approach. This study aims to discuss the narrative of identity that Immortal Rites wish to embody for its fans to understand. By focusing analysis on the main data of song lyrics with additional data in the form of interviews, we found that the echoed locality represents a notion of contemporary Javanese identity. Within the arts, there was a close relevance of the content with the identical Javaneseness in the era of the Kadiri kingdom. Thus, based on the engagement of the arts and the Kediri-based Javaneseness, it leads us to an understanding of the mediated cultural representation of contemporary Javanese identity, of a Daha-based Javanese identity.

Abstract

This paper examines the cross-border dynamics of Japanese metalcore, focusing particularly on the band Crossfaith, exploring how they navigate the complexities of global mobility, cultural identity, and transnationalism in their music. This study employs a case study approach, using document analysis as the primary method. The data then was analyzed by identifying recurring themes, patterns, and relationships. The results show that while metalcore itself is already transnational due to its use of English, Crossfaith exemplifies the creation of a "borderless" sound that transcends national boundaries. Through collaborations with international artists, performances at the Nikkosan Rinnoji Temple, and partnerships with local artists, the band manages to maintain a strong Japanese identity while appealing to a global audience. However, cross-border challenges remain, including linguistic barriers, visa restrictions, and cultural negotiations, which impact Crossfaith's international success, revealing the uneven access to global stages for non-Western artists. These challenges highlight the need for a more inclusive and accessible global music industry. This study concludes by advocating for the reduction of systemic barriers to ensure that diverse musical voices can fully participate in the global exchange of ideas, thereby enriching the cultural landscape and promoting greater cross-border collaboration in music.

Abstract

The Rukat Bumi tradition in Tlekung Village and Sukun Village holds deep cultural significance for the local community. However, challenges to its sustainability cannot be overlooked. This study aims to: (1) explain the implementation of Rukat Bumi in Tlekung Village and Sukun Village, and (2) explain adaptive strategies to preserve its cultural identity. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the study finds that Rukat Bumi in Tlekung Village is conducted in a pavilion where the community gathers for a communal meal. In contrast, in Sukun Village, that tradition involves a procession through the village streets, featuring offerings of crops, particularly a large tumpeng. To ensure the continuity of Rukat Bumi, several adaptive strategies have emerged, including (a) education, (b) leveraging social media, (c) collaboration with various stakeholders, and (d) the development of creative products. Addressing the challenges faced by Rukat Bumiin both locations has significant implications for cultural preservation. Moreover, implementing adaptive strategies not only sustains cultural identity but also fosters an inclusive space for that tradition to thrive across generations.

Abstract

The border area between Indonesia and Timor Leste in East Nusa Tenggara exhibits complex social, economic, and cultural dynamics that rely heavily on cross-border activities facilitated by the Border Pass (PLB) and Border Crossing Identification Card (KILB). The COVID-19 pandemic temporarily halted these activities, disrupting trade, social relations, and the economic well-being of border communities. This study aims to examine the role of PLB and KILB in the lives of people living along the Indonesia–Timor Leste border. The research adopts a qualitative approach using a literature review method presented descriptively. The findings indicate that the restriction of cross-border mobility led to limited access in maintaining family ties, practicing cultural traditions, and engaging in economic activities. Communities experienced a sense of loss in their daily social interactions. Within the framework of cultural constructivism, social interactions and legal frameworks shape a culture that influences identity and cross-border relationships. Therefore, restoring mobility and the functions of PLB/KILB is essential for post-pandemic cultural reconstruction and for strengthening the social ties and identity of border communities.

Abstract

This article examines the construction and negotiation of queer masculinities in Southeast Asian cinema through a comparative analysis of The Iron Ladies (dir. Yongyoot Thongkongtoon, Thailand, 2000), Arisan! (dir. Nia Dinata, Indonesia, 2003), and Die Beautiful (dir. Jun Lana, Philippines, 2016). While dominant regional representations of masculinity have been shaped by heteronormative, patriarchal, and nationalist ideologies, these films offer alternative portrayals that challenge and reconfigure normative gender and sexual identities. Drawing on Edward Said’s postcolonial critique of representation and José Esteban Muñoz’s theory of disidentification, this study employs qualitative textual analysis to investigate how queer male identities are represented within specific cultural and national contexts. The findings reveal that queer masculinities in these films are articulated through strategies of disidentification, performance, and resistance, negotiating visibility and belonging without fully conforming to or rejecting dominant norms. Each film reflects the particular socio-political tensions of its national context, while simultaneously disrupting Western-centric or Orientalist constructions of queerness. Ultimately, this study demonstrates how Southeast Asian cinema functions as a critical space for reimagining queer identity and masculinity beyond colonial and heteronormative frameworks.
