Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyze the impact of the European Union Anti-Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) on the export performance of Indonesia's agricultural products. Specifically, it evaluates how the EUDR affects export volumes to European Union (EU) member countries compared to non-EU countries. Additionally, the study examines the role of macroeconomic variables such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP), population size, exchange rates, and economic distance in shaping Indonesia’s international trade patterns. Methodology: This research employs a quantitative approach using the gravity trade model as the analytical framework. Panel data from 20 of Indonesia’s trading partners, including both EU and non-EU countries, for the period 2018–2023 were used. The Poisson Pseudo Maximum Likelihood (PPML) estimation method was applied to address issues of heteroskedasticity and zero trade values in bilateral trade data. Key variables analyzed include GDP, population size, exchange rates, economic distance, as well as dummy variables for the implementation of EUDR and trading partner status (EU vs. non-EU). Results: The findings indicate that the implementation of EUDR has a significant negative effect on the export volume of Indonesia's agricultural products to EU member countries. Conversely, the EUDR's impact on exports to non-EU countries is statistically insignificant. The analysis also reveals that GDP growth in trading partner countries positively influences export volumes, while the depreciation of the Indonesian Rupiah against the US Dollar significantly reduces export performance, particularly in sectors dependent on imported raw materials. Economic distance between countries has a minimal impact, largely due to international trade agreements that reduce trade barriers. Applications/Originality/Value : This study provides valuable insights into the impact of international environmental regulations on the export performance of developing countries. By integrating the gravity trade model with the PPML approach, the research offers an innovative method for assessing the effects of EUDR in the context of global trade. The findings are relevant for policymakers in designing strategies to adapt to global environmental regulations, such as strengthening trade relations with non-EU countries and promoting sustainable practices in the agricultural sector. The originality of this study lies in its use of multi-country panel data and its focus on the interplay of economic, policy, and environmental variables in shaping trade patterns.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the impact of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on the export growth of Indonesia's leading specialized products. A sample of this study was selected by identifying every commodity that holds more than a 25% share in the international market. The five specialized products also represent Indonesia's leading sectors, which include the manufacturing industry (palm oil, HS Code: 151190, and coconut oil, HS Code: 151319), agricultural products (rubber, HS Code: 400122), and natural resources (coal, HS Code: 270119, and tin, HS Code: 800110). The analytical model was tested on Indonesia's leading products in 15 importing countries during the 2010-2020 period and estimated using PPML and GMM as a robustness test. The ICT variable was proxied by bandwidth capacity, which represents the quality of internet access, both in Indonesia as an exporting country and in importing countries for Indonesia's leading products. The results of the analysis indicate that the quality of internet access has a positive impact on export growth. Additionally, other control variables, such as GDP, population, RTA, language, and importers from Asia, also have a positive impact on the export growth of Indonesia's leading commodities. It can be concluded that Indonesia’s export pattern remains concentrated in Asia's partner countries, driven by economies of scale and hindered by geographical distance. This study suggests that the development of ICT is typically a long-term process, so it takes some time to experience the significant impact of ICT, especially on exports.

Abstract

This research investigates the influence of the factors contributing to the Human Development Index (HDI) and the degree of technological openness on human development within the regions of Java and Borneo during the period from 2018 to 2023. Employing panel data alongside the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) estimation approach, the findings indicate that technological openness, gross domestic product per capita, educational density per capita, net enrollment ratios, and life expectancy exert a significant effect on HDI. In Java, the economic and educational variables demonstrate a more pronounced impact, facilitated by superior infrastructure. Conversely, in Borneo, the participation in education and the level of technological openness asume an critical role, exhibiting a more substantial influence in the short term. These results underscore the imperative for region-specific policy interventions, which should encompass the augmentation of technological accessibility, the promotion of equitable economic advancement, and the fortification of educational and healthcare infrastructure. Through the implementation of appropriate strategies, disparities in human development can be mitigated, thereby fostering the attainment of sustainable development goals (SDGs).
