Abstract

The 2022 PISA results show that the mathematical literacy performance of Indonesian students remains low. This study aims to describe the mathematical literacy abilities of ninth-grade students through the implementation of Problem Based Learning (PBL) supported by Nearpod in the topic of Systems of Linear Equations in Two Variables (SPLDV). The research subjects consisted of 29 students from MTs Negeri 1 Ogan Ilir. Data were collected through written tests in the form of open-ended questions, as well as interviews. The PBL learning supported by Nearpod was carried out in one meeting prior to the administration of the test. The data were analyzed using triangulation to obtain a comprehensive description of students’ mathematical literacy abilities. The findings indicate that the implementation of PBL supported by Nearpod can enhance students’ mathematical literacy, particularly in the aspect of formulating problems. However, students still encounter difficulties in mathematizing contextual information into mathematical models and performing basic calculations accurately. These findings contribute to efforts to improve the quality of mathematics learning through the integration of problem-based learning and interactive technological tools.

Abstract

The low achievement of Indonesian students in international assessments such as the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) highlights the need for contextual and technology-based innovations in mathematics learning. This study aims to develop Nearpod-based interactive teaching materials that are valid, practical, and have a potential effect in strengthening junior high school students’ mathematical literacy. The research employed a formative evaluation approach consisting of the stages of preliminary study, self-evaluation, expert review, one-to-one, small group, and field test. The participants were 31 eighth-grade students from MTsN 1 Ogan Ilir, South Sumatra. Data were collected through walkthroughs, interviews, observations, and questionnaires, and analyzed using a qualitative descriptive method. The findings revealed that the developed teaching materials were valid in terms of content, construct, and language; practical for classroom implementation; and demonstrated a potential effect in enhancing students’ mathematical literacy through active engagement in the Formulate, Employ, and Interpret processes as outlined in the PISA 2022 framework. This result from students’ post-test work, which showed improved accuracy in modeling and interpreting the contextual problem. This study contributes a structured and literacy-oriented model for developing technology-based interactive teaching materials, which can serve as a reference for mathematics learning innovation in the 21st century.

Abstract

Understanding the concept of whole number operations, especially addition and subtraction, is an important basis in mathematics that must be mastered by students. However, many students still experience difficulties in understanding the material, especially in more complex operations. This study aims to analyze students' concept understanding ability on whole number operation material by applying the demonstration method. The research method used was descriptive qualitative, involving 26 students of class VII.A at Srijaya Negara Junior High School Palembang as research subjects. Data was collected through written tests consisting of five description questions and interviews to explore students' understanding more deeply. The results showed that 47.62% of students scored in the high category, 14.28% in the medium category, and 38.09% in the low category, with an average score of 59.05 which indicates understanding in the medium category. The application of the demonstration method, in which students actively participated by walking on the marked tiles, proved to increase students' enthusiasm and provide a more memorable learning experience. Nonetheless, the proportion of students in the low category indicates the need for more attention in the learning process. This study concludes that the demonstration method is effective in improving concept understanding, but needs to be balanced with additional approaches to support students who have difficulty in understanding integer operation material.
