Abstract

This study aims to develop the Magic Cube, an innovative manipulative learning medium designed to improve students’ conceptual understanding of number patterns. Number patterns are essential for building mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills, yet many students struggle due to abstract teaching methods that lack interactive components. Previous studies have highlighted the effectiveness of game-based learning, but there remains a research gap in developing tangible and engaging media that directly support students’ comprehension. To address this, the study applied a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model, consisting of five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The Magic Cube, designed as a three-dimensional cube equipped with material and question cards, was validated by two media experts and two material experts, achieving validity scores of 86% and 73%. Practicality tests involving teachers and students resulted in scores of 84.83% and 86.6%, respectively. Furthermore, pre-test and post-test results showed a significant improvement in students’ conceptual understanding, with an N-Gain score of 0.7, categorized as high. These findings indicate that the Magic Cube is a valid, practical, and effective instructional tool. The study contributes to enhancing interactive mathematics learning and provides broader implications for fostering active engagement and improving students’ comprehension of abstract mathematical concepts.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms of metacognitive errors made by junior high school students in solving questions developed by the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) on number content. Metacognitive skills are part of a higher-order thinking process that includes awareness and control of one's own thinking process, including strategy planning, monitoring implementation, and evaluating results. In the context of PISA-like math problem that require contextual and complex problem solving, these skills are crucial. This study employed a qualitative approach using a case study design. The research subjects consisted of three VIII grade students who were identified according to the categories of high, medium, and low mathematical ability. The main instruments were PISA-like math problem and interview guidelines based on metacognitive indicators. Data were obtained using written assessments and comprehensive interviews, then examined through qualitative descriptive analysis. The results showed that all students, regardless of mathematics ability level, made metacognitive errors. The most dominant errors occurred at the planning and evaluation stages. Students with low ability had difficulty understanding the problem, identifying relevant information, and designing a solution strategy. While students with medium and high abilities tend not to evaluate steps and results optimally. The results underscore the significance of enharing metacognitive abilities in mathematics education to foster reflective thinking and tackle complex problems.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop a mathematics learning tool called “Pizza for Circles” to help students better understand the concept of circles. Students often memorize formulas without grasping the underlying concepts, particularly the area and circumference of a circle, which is the problem this study addresses. A research and development method was used to create manipulative and visual media supported by a website as a learning aid. This media presents a circle as a pizza divided into eight slices, illustrating the relationships among its components. A one-group pretest–posttest design was applied to a small group of three seventh-grade students. The media was validated by two experts, achieving 98.75% for material content and 86.4% for media design, both of which fall in the highly valid category. A small-group trial with the same three students showed a descriptive increase in the mean score from 2.0 to 5.83 out of 10 after a single-session intervention, corresponding to a normalised gain of 0.48 (medium category). Because the sample was very small, the results were not tested inferentially; nevertheless, they indicated an improvement in students’ understanding, as evidenced by higher post-test scores than pre-test scores. These results suggest that the “Pizza for Circles” media can aid in the initial understanding of circle concepts through a visual and manipulative approach. Further research with a larger sample and a longer learning period is nevertheless required before any claim of effectiveness can be made.

Abstract

Geometry materials require visual ability to understand abstract objects, while students in elementary school are still in the concrete operational stage, so they need to understand concepts on real objects. The abstractness of geometry at the elementary school level can be overcome by using pop-up book media. The main objective of this research is to develop mathematics learning media by using pop-up book nets of building spaces. The ADDIE development model was used in this study. Based on the validity test conducted by material experts and media experts, this media falls into the valid category. To see the effectiveness of the props obtained from the results of observations and interviews. Meanwhile, the practicality aspect is seen by evaluating the practicality by teachers and students. According to this assessment, the teacher assigned a score of 54 to the practicality value, while students averaged 60. Both scores obtained are in the practical category. Therefore, the learning media learning pop-up book nets of spaces developed is valid, effective, and practical. Teachers can use this teaching aid as an alternative to encourage engaging learning and improve student understanding, especially in elementary school geometry.
