Abstract

This study attempts to explain the use of pragmatic markers in Americas’ Got Talent judges’ commentaries. The aims of the study are to analyze the existence of verbal and visual pragmatic markers and explain their relationship. The verbal pragmatic markers are categorized into four types based on the typology of pragmatic markers proposed by Fraser (1996). They are basic markers, commentary markers, parallel markers, and discourse markers. While the visual pragmatic markers divided into thinking face, pointing with gaze and hand movement and smile following the pragmatic function facial gestures from Bavelas & Chovil (2013). This research employed descriptive method with qualitative approach. The object of the study is judges of Americas’ Got Talent season 13 which consist of Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Mell B, and Howie Mendel. The study revealed that the judges used the basic markers to express the main message of the comment, commentary markers to express the message contains in the comment toward the main message, parallel markers to express the complement message toward the main message and the discourse markers to express the relation between the main message and the other utterance. The visual pragmatic markers performed also signals certain message related to verbal markers. The judges performed the thinking face to signal the word search, pointing with gaze and hand movement to emphasize the messages convey in utterance and smile to signal pleasure. This research could provide an understanding of EFL learners in using pragmatic markers as a way to improve communication strategy in communication.

Abstract

This study explores students’ perception of English Club as a platform for enhancing their speaking skills. The English Club provides a supportive and interactive environment where students can improve their speaking skills through group discussions, role playing, interactive game, storytelling and presentation. This study was conducted at English Club of English Study program, Universitas Timor. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the data were collected through observation and interviews with 5 students who actively participate in the English Club. The findings presented that most students perceive the English Club as beneficial in improving their speaking ability especially in pronunciation, fluency and vocabulary. Additionally, students appreciate the informal learning atmosphere which reduce their fear and anxiety in speaking. This study concludes English teachers can improve students’ English language proficiency by implementing or developing the English Club's teaching methodology and creating a more relaxed and enjoyable learning atmosphere.

Abstract

Bullying di sekolah menjadi permasalahan serius yang berdampak negatif pada aspek psikologis, sosial, dan akademik siswa. Sebagai upaya pencegahan, kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dilaksanakan di SMKN Bikomi Selatan dengan tujuan meningkatkan kesadaran siswa terhadap bahaya bullying dan pentingnya menciptakan lingkungan sekolah yang aman. Kegiatan ini melibatkan siswa kelas XI dan menggunakan metode sosialisasi berbasis media visual, diskusi kelompok, serta pembuatan poster edukasi anti-bullying. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan bahwa kegiatan ini efektif meningkatkan pemahaman siswa bahwa bullying bukan hanya sekedar tindakan kekerasan fisik, seperti memukul dan menendang teman, melainkan bercanda berlebihan serta mengejek pun termasuk tindakan bullying yang menunjukkan peningkatan sebesar 76,2%. Selain itu, semua siswa juga memahami bahwa bullying dapat memengaruhi kesehatan mental seseorang, yang mencerminkan peningkatan sebesar 47,6% serta tingkat kepuasan mencapai 94,57%. Output kegiatan meliputi peningkatan kesadaran siswa, pembuatan poster edukasi yang dipasang di mading sekolah, dan komitmen siswa untuk berperan aktif dalam mencegah bullying. Meskipun demikian, diperlukan upaya lanjutan berupa pelatihan rutin dan pembentukan tim anti-bullying untuk menjamin keberlanjutan program. Kegiatan ini memberikan dampak positif yang signifikan dan dapat dijadikan model untuk pengabdian masyarakat di sekolah lain dalam mendukung terciptanya lingkungan pendidikan yang inklusif dan bebas dari bullying.
