Abstract

Abstract: Palembang or Pempek City is the capital city of South Sumatra Province. Palembang itself is included as the 2nd largest city in Sumatra. With an area of 400 km² and 1.6 million inhabitants in it. Palembang is now classified as a metropolitan city with the fifth density level in Indonesia following Jakarta, Medan, Bandung, Surabaya and is ranked nineteenth in Southeast Asia. It’s recorded in history that it was the capital of the largest Buddhist kingdom, namely the Sriwijaya Kingdom in the ninth century. Palembang has existed since June 16, 683AD and is the oldest city in Indonesia. Along with the development of Palembang  and its rapidly growing population, the government seeks to improve the city's infrastructure system in Palembang  by referring to the economic, social, and cultural aspects of the people of Palembang itself. One of the City Infrastructure Systems that supports community activities is seen in the city park area on Tasik, namely Kambang Iwak Park. For this research, this research was carried out by applying a qualitative descriptive method, which if defined according to Sugiyono (2016) this research method depends on the philosophy of postpositivism which aims to examine natural objects.Keyword: Palembang city; City Infrastructure System; Kambang Iwak ParkAbstrak: Palembang atau kota pempek adalah Ibu Kota Provinsi Sumatera Selatan. Abstract

The development of an area cannot be separated from the existence of public space, Public Space such as Simpang Lima is one of the important aspects in city development so that it can be utilized by the community, public space must be usable by all levels of society, including elderly users. Currently, the city of Semarang has experienced an increase in the number of elderly people since 2017 and continues to increase, special attention to elderly users is important so that this increase does not become a new problem in urban areas. One of the government's efforts to pay attention to the elderly is by creating public spaces. Public spaces in the city of Semarang, such as Simpang Lima, are still popular with the elderly. Many elderly people are found in the morning with sports activities, but according to the elderly, the facilities at Simpang Lima have not been able to meet their needs. So that it raises several problems in the field, these problems are the basis of the study, namely What is the accessibility of the elderly in the Simpang Lima public space? What are the obstacles to accessibility for the elderly in using public space facilities at Simpang Lima? The research method uses a qualitative approach by conducting observations, interviews, and literature reviews after which it is analyzed using accessibility requirements. The activities of the elderly in reaching and using public spaces are in accordance with the accessibility that has been provided, this is based on convenience and safety. Accessibility barriers experienced by the elderly at Simpang Lima are the lack of supporting accessibility facilities such as comfortable seating, information boards and directions, and toilets complete with facilities for the elderly.

Abstract

Penggaron Terminal in Semarang City, as one of the main terminals, faces problems related to the use of space that is not optimal. Many users prefer to do activities around the red light at the terminal entrance rather than inside the terminal itself, which causes vehicle congestion and illegal bus parking. This study aims to optimize the use of the terminal and overcome the problem of illegal parking by using the Person Centered Maps, Place Centered Maps, and Physical Trace methods. These methods are used to map user movement patterns, identify space usage, and analyze physical traces left at the terminal. The results of the study indicate that users gather more often outside the terminal, and there is irregularity in the management of space and parking that affects the smoothness of traffic. Based on this analysis, it is recommended to rearrange the parking area, improve facilities inside the terminal, and install clear signs to optimize the function of the terminal. The implementation of this solution is expected to improve the safety, comfort, and efficiency of terminal use, as well as support the smooth flow of traffic around the Terminal area.

Abstract

The development of smart cities has become a strategic priority for local governments seeking to enhance citizens’ quality of life, strengthen sustainable development, and improve public space management. Kambang Iwak Park in Palembang represents one of the city’s major urban green spaces that has undergone significant revitalization and serves as a case study for smart city implementation in public areas. This study analyzes the application of Cohen’s six smart city dimensions—Smart People, Smart Living, Smart Government, Smart Economy, Smart Mobility, and Smart Environment—and their relationship with Carmona’s six urban design dimensions. This qualitative–descriptive research utilizes visual observations, historical data, and facility documentation extracted from the provided presentation. The findings indicate that Kambang Iwak Park effectively integrates several smart city dimensions, particularly Smart Living, Smart Environment, and Smart Mobility. Nonetheless, issues such as irregular parking, insufficient smart services, and poorly organized street vendors remain challenges. The study concludes that integrating smart city principles with urban design concepts enhances public space quality and supports sustainable urban development in Palembang.

Abstract

This study develops an architectural design framework integrating fun and playful spatial characteristics with futuristic, science-based approaches to enhance children’s engagement with science and technology learning. Traditional learning environments are often rigid and fail to stimulate curiosity, especially among children aged 7–11. Utilizing a qualitative conceptual analysis, this research synthesizes architectural theory, neuroscience learning principles, children’s spatial psychology, and science-based design methodologies. The results show that playful spatial elements—dynamic forms, color contrasts, sensory interactions, and imaginative environments—significantly improve motivation, exploration, and conceptual understanding. Futuristic design components further support scientific literacy by projecting technological possibilities and integrating interactive digital tools. The study produces a conceptual architectural model linking playfulness, scientific experience, and future-oriented visualization. It concludes that learning environments must be intentionally designed to merge emotional engagement, cognitive stimulation, and technological representation. The implications extend to the design of children’s museums, science centers, and early STEM learning facilities.
