Abstract

Erosion in watershed area can be triggered by changes in land use, human activities, and cause increased sedimentation, flood risk, and environmental degradation, effective conservation measures are necessary to ensure its impact is reduced. To determine potential erosion hazards in Sail Sub-Watershed the method used is Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE), parameters include rainfall, soil erodibility, slope length and slope, and land cover and soil conservation. In addition, an analysis of permissible erosion and an erosion hazard index were carried out. The research results show that the level of erosion hazard is influenced by the value of the rain erosivity factor (R) of 2678.98 m with the wet rainfall classification. The soil erodibility factor (K) is dominated by cambisol soil types with a K value of 0.28 and podzolic with a K value of 0.20. The length and slope (LS) factors are dominated by flat topography with an LS value of 0.4. Meanwhile, the land cover and soil conservation (CP) factors mostly consist of open land, shrubs and plantations that have not received any conservation efforts. The erosion hazard level (TBE) in  ranges from moderate to very severe, indicating that the areas affected by erosion are predominantly due to the use of open land, such as at station 16. The erosion hazard index (EHI) varies from moderate to very high. As a land conservation effort, vegetative methods in the form of reforestation are recommended for open land, while terrace walls or wet masonry are recommended for agricultural land and plantations. In addition, conservation structures such as retaining walls, bench terraces, or stairs can be implemented on plantation land to reduce the danger of erosion.

Abstract

Land cover changes reflect the pressure of development and increased human activities that have an impact on environmental imbalance. As a strategic coastal city, Tanjungpinang faces challenges in maintaining the sustainability of its regional ecosystem. This study aims to analyze the dynamics of land cover changes and predict their conditions until 2043 using remote sensing technology and geographic information systems (GIS), incorporating Cellular Automata and logistic regression methods. The results of the study showed that land cover changes between 2003 and 2023 increased built-up area by 27.15 km² and decreased Vegetation by 14.02 km². Bare Land increased by 1.45 km² at the beginning of the period, then reduced to a total of 12.74 km². Water bodies decreased by 0.39 km². Predictions for 2043 indicate that built-up area increased by 5.12 square kilometres, while Vegetation decreased by 6.33 square kilometres. Bare land increased by 1.34 km², while water bodies declined by 0.14 km². This pattern indicates a trend of converting vegetative land into built-up areas due to the increasing demand for regional space.

Abstract

Commercial facilities such as supermarkets, minimarkets, and traditional stalls are an essential part of urban economic infrastructure services, especially in areas with high population growth. However, the rapid growth of population is not always balanced by an even distribution of commercial facilities. This triggers spatial accessibility inequality. This study aims to analyze the coverage of service areas of the three categories of commercial facilities in Pinang Kencana sub-district, Tanjungpinang City, using a spatial approach based on GIS. The methods employed include network analysis, service area analysis, and Euclidean distance analysis. The results of the study show that the coverage of 0-2,000 meters is an area served by all types of commercial facilities, with an area of 82.5%, while the area beyond 2,000 meters, which accounts for 17.5%, is an unserved area located in the east and southeast. The served zone is characterized by agglomerated residential areas, which have an adequate road network. In contrast, the unserved area is marked by limited road networks and low residential density. This research has strategic implications for policymakers, especially in preparing zoning regulations and Detailed Spatial Planning Plans (RDTR) in Pinang Kencana sub-district, East Tanjungpinang District, Tanjungpinang City.

Abstract

The development of built-up land in Tanjungpinang City has demonstrated rapid spatial dynamics, in line with the increasing intensity of urban activities since its designation as the capital of Riau Islands Province in 2002. This study aims to analyze the changes in built-up land in Tanjungpinang City over the period 2003 to 2023 and to identify the key factors driving this transformation. The research employed spatial analysis based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS), utilizing satellite imagery maps from the years 2003, 2013, and 2023. The findings indicate that built-up land expanded from 1,133.91 hectares (8%) in 2003 to 3,848.67 hectares (26%) in 2023, with the predominant direction of expansion occurring toward the eastern and southern parts of the city. The primary factors contributing to this growth include population increase, the development of new activity centers such as Pulau Dompak, and the construction of major infrastructure, notably the development of DI Panjaitan streets. These results suggest a growing tendency toward urban sprawl in the physical development of Tanjungpinang City, thus requiring adaptive and sustainable spatial planning strategies.

Abstract

Agricultural sustainability is essential for rural communities, particularly in Kampung Gisi, where celery cultivation is a major source of household income. However, farmers continue to rely on manual irrigation, which is labor intensive, time consuming, and often inefficient in terms of water use. This study aimed to design and implement a solar powered automatic irrigation system that improves water efficiency while reducing farmers’ workload. The approach addressed these challenges by developing an autonomous system powered by solar energy and guided by soil moisture sensing to optimize water delivery. The proposed system integrates a solar panel, an ESP32 microcontroller, a soil moisture sensor, a relay module, and a DC pump to enable irrigation decisions based on real time soil moisture data. Implementation and testing were conducted in Kampung Gisi, Bintan Regency, Riau Islands. Data collection included site visits and semi structured interviews with local farmers to document existing irrigation practices and constraints. Field trials indicated that the system effectively automated irrigation, and the results showed an approximately 30% reduction in water use compared with manual watering. Prior to deployment, farmers typically spent several hours per day irrigating, whereas the automated system substantially reduced time requirements, allowing farmers to allocate effort to other farm activities. Farmers also reported more stable soil moisture conditions, which supported healthier crop development and improved yields. Overall, the findings demonstrate that the system can enhance irrigation efficiency, reduce labor demands, and support more sustainable agricultural practices. Community participation was critical, as farmers developed technical familiarity and a sense of ownership, which supports long term system viability. These results underscore the role of appropriate technology in strengthening farming communities, and they suggest that future work should prioritize accessibility and scalability to support broader adoption.
