Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of students' use of local languages on their skills and abilities in Indonesian. A quantitative approach was employed, utilizing a survey method as the primary data collection technique. Random sampling was applied to ensure a diverse and representative respondent pool. The subjects of this study were UNBP students from various backgrounds who actively use both Indonesian and local languages in their daily interactions. The results revealed that local languages serve as the main communication tool among students who come from the same ethnic group or region. They are still widely used in different contexts, not only in non-formal settings, such as interactions with friends and family, but also in formal environments, including during the lecture process and academic discussions. This indicates that students tend to switch between languages depending on the context, a phenomenon commonly referred to as diglossia. Furthermore, the findings suggest that the use of local languages influences students' proficiency in Indonesian. While some students can transition smoothly between the two languages, others face challenges in using Indonesian correctly and effectively, particularly in formal writing and verbal expression. This difficulty is often attributed to linguistic interference, where structures, vocabulary, or pronunciation from local languages influence the way students construct sentences in Indonesian. Overall, the study highlights that the dominance of local languages in daily interactions has a noticeable impact on students' Indonesian language skills. Although local languages play an essential role in preserving cultural identity and fostering a sense of belonging, their extensive use may also affect students' ability to communicate in standard Indonesian, particularly in academic and professional contexts. These findings emphasize the importance of enhancing students' Indonesian language proficiency while maintaining the richness and diversity of local languages. Future studies could explore effective strategies for bilingual education to ensure a balanced development of both languages among students.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate teachers’ perceptions toward the use of AI SpeechAce as a medium for improving English speaking skills at Islamic Boarding School in Lhokseumawe. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method involving 20 teachers as the participants. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observations, and documentation and were analyzed using thematic analysis following the procedures proposed by Braun and Clarke (2006). The findings revealed that teachers generally had positive perceptions toward the use of SpeechAce, although some of them initially felt nervous and unfamiliar with the technology. After using the platform, teachers considered SpeechAce interesting, easy to use, and helpful in supporting independent speaking practice. Teachers reported perceived improvements in pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, fluency, and self-confidence after using SpeechAce. In addition, teachers perceived that features such as automatic feedback and conversation practice were beneficial in helping them identify and correct speaking mistakes independently. However, they also reported several technical challenges, including limited access, unstable internet connections, and device-related issues. Overall, teachers perceived SpeechAce as an effective and flexible medium that supports independent English speaking practice and enhances their confidence in using English.

Abstract

This study examines the use of abbreviated language in Indonesian song lyrics through a pragmatic study, focusing on the communicative functions emerging from the use of abbreviations, acronyms, and non-standard forms. The purpose of this study is to analyze the pragmatic meaning of condensed language in Indonesian song lyrics and identify the dominant communicative functions within them. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach, incorporating George Yule's pragmatic theory and the concept of concise communication in popular language. The research data consists of words, phrases, and abbreviated expressions such as HTS, TTS, EGP, anjay, cepmek, jablay, and meriang found in popular Indonesian song lyrics. Data collection techniques include documentation and recording of selected song lyrics, which are then analyzed using contextual pragmatic analysis methods. The results indicate that condensed language in song lyrics has various pragmatic functions, such as expressiveness, social identity, humor, social criticism, and implicature. Furthermore, the use of abbreviated language also shapes certain communicative functions, particularly those of romance, youth identity, popular lifestyles, and emotional expression. The abbreviated language used in song lyrics is not only to facilitate communication but also to strengthen emotional closeness between songwriter and listener. This research shows that the phenomenon of abbreviated language in song lyrics is part of the development of digital communication culture and linguistic creativity in modern society.
