Abstract

Background: Anemia is a global health issue affecting 24.3% of the world's population, with a high prevalence among women of reproductive age. In Indonesia, the prevalence of anemia in women is 27.2%, higher in rural areas. Adolescent girls are particularly vulnerable to anemia due to menstruation and inadequate nutritional intake, which can impact productivity, immunity, and pregnancy complications. Hemoglobin levels and erythrocyte indices (MCV,MCH, MCHC) are crucial for diagnosing and classifying anemia. Objective: To describe hemoglobin levels and erythrocyte indices among adolescent girls at SMA Kristen Sonder, Minahasa Regency. Method: This type of research uses a descriptive design. The sample consisted of 30 respondents selected using purposive sampling based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Primary data were obtained through complete blood count tests and questionnaires. Results: Most samples had normal hemoglobin levels (90%), while 10% had low hemoglobin levels. Erythrocyte indices showed normal MCV in 86.6% of samples and low in 13.3%; normal MCH in 80% and low in 20%; and normal MCHC in 100% of samples. Of the three samples with anemia, two were microcytic, one was normocytic, and none were macrocytic. Conclusion: The majority of adolescent girls at SMA Kristen Sonder, Minahasa Regency, had normal hemoglobin levels and erythrocyte indices. Keywords: Adolescent girls; Erythrocyte indice; Hemoglobin

Abstract

Background: Sleep is an essential biological need, especially during adolescence, a period of significant physical and hormonal changes. Poor sleep quality can affect health, including lowering hemoglobin levels, which increases the risk of anemia. In Indonesia, the prevalence of anemia among female adolescents aged 15–24 years is 32%, but data on sleep quality and hemoglobin levels in Minahasa Regency are limited. Objective: To describe the sleep quality and hemoglobin levels of female adolescents at SMA Kristen Sonder Minahasa Regency. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 30 female adolescents selected through purposive sampling. Sleep quality data were collected using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and hemoglobin levels were measured using a hematology analyzer. Results: The study results showed that respondents with poor sleep quality totaled 24 individuals (80.00%), while those with good sleep quality numbered 6 individuals (20.00%). For hemoglobin levels, 27 respondents (90.00%) were in the normal category, and 3 respondents (10.00%) had low hemoglobin levels. Conclusion: Most female adolescents at SMA Kristen Sonder had poor sleep quality, and the hemoglobin levels of the participant were in the normal range. Abstract

Abstract

Overweight and obesity are important risk factors for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). Fasting Blood Glucose (FBG) examination assesses blood glucose levels after an eight-hour fast. Detecting FBG levels in individuals who are overweight or obese, particularly young adults, is essential for preventing metabolic disorders such as T2DM. This study aimed to describe the fasting blood glucose (FBG) profile of female students with overweight and obesity in the 2023 cohort of the Medical Education Study Program. This study employed a descriptive design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 30 female students who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected using purposive sampling. Most respondents in both groups had normal FBG levels. In the overweight group, 86.7% were in the normal category and 13.3% in the pre-diabetic category, while in the obese group, 80% had normal levels and 20% were pre-diabetic. No respondents were found in the diabetic category. Increased FBG levels were associated with factors such as a family history of diabetes, frequent consumption of sugary foods and fast food, low physical activity, and inadequate sleep duration. Most female students with overweight or obesity had normal FBG levels; however, the proportion of pre-diabetes was higher in the obese group. These findings indicate that early metabolic disturbances may occur in both groups, particularly among individuals with a sedentary lifestyle and a family history of diabetes.
