Abstract

Abstract

Psychological pressure can hinder students from performing optimally in academic settings. In response, self-compassion (SC) emerges as a crucial skill to help students manage stress and maintain mental health. While previous research has predominantly examined SC in clinical contexts, this study offers a novel perspective by investigating its application within an academic setting. The aim is to develop a theoretical model that explains the role of SC in addressing psychological academic challenges. A systematic literature review was conducted using the PRISMA model, supported by big data and visualized through VOS viewer. Using the Publish or Perish application, 505 articles were identified from Scopus- and Sinta-indexed journals (Elsevier, PubMed, Crossref, Google Scholar) published between 2019 and 2023. Nineteen articles were selected for in-depth analysis. The results reveal two academic categories: positive and negative. Self-compassion enhances variables in positive settings and moderates the effects of negative academic stressors. This research contributes to the design of psychological intervention strategies for students. Keywords: psychological academic challenges, big data, self-compassion, students

Abstract

High prevalence of mental health cases is not followed by optimal mental health services that are accessible to most public. Individual barriers are needed such as self-compassion skills. The aim of this research is to describe the dynamics of individual self-compassion with mental health problems. This study used a qualitative approach with a systematic literature review method. The data mining using Publish and Perish for the last 5 years of research (2019-2023), was limited to English-language, and Scopus-indexed literature by excluding proceedings and book chapters. 6 literatures most relevant to the research topic were obtained from high quality databases (Taylor & Francis, Springer Link, APA, and Oxford Academic). The result is that self-compassion has an important role in the dynamics of mental health, where increasing self-compassion can contribute to better mental health. Self-compassion important for individuals to better cope with pressure and stress, and maintain good mental health. This literature review hopes to provide information the role of self-compassion as a barrier mental health problems.

Abstract

This study aims to develop and examine the validity and reliability of a contextual learning engagement scale for elementary school students. The scale was develop based on the learning motivation and behavior theory by Schunk, Pintrich, and Meece, and interest dimensions from Ainley. A quantitative approach using instrument development design was employed. Data analysis was conducted using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to evaluate the construct structure. A total of 330 students from grades 4, 5 and 6 were selected through cluster random sampling. The results revealed that the scale consists of four dimensions: learning enthusiasm, learning persistence, learning autonomy, and learning reflection. All dimensions met the requirements for construct, convergent, and discriminant validity, with Average Variance Extracted (AVE) values exceeding 0.50. Additionally, the reliability coefficients, including Cronbach’s Alpha and Composite Reliability, were both above 0.86. The model fit evaluation indicated that 9 out of 10 indices met the fit criteria. These findings demonstrate that learning engagement is a multidimensional construct that can be reliably measured in elementary education settings. The scale is expected to serve as a practical assessment tool for teachers, guidance and counseling, researchers, and policymakers in designing learning strategies that promote students active engagement.
