Abstract

Turnaround Time (TAT) is an important indicator of laboratory service quality that supports accurate diagnosis and clinical decision-making. Delays in laboratory results may be influenced by pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases. This study aimed to analyze the factors influencing laboratory Turnaround Time (TAT) at Grandmed Hospital Lubuk Pakam. This study used a quantitative approach with an analytical observational design and a cross-sectional method. The population consisted of 32 clinical laboratory personnel selected using total sampling. Data were collected through validated and reliable questionnaires and secondary data from laboratory information system records. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis with Spearman’s rank correlation test at a 95% confidence level. The results showed that most TAT values met the standard (87.5%). The average TAT for emergency services was 87 minutes, outpatient services 118 minutes, and inpatient services 130 minutes, all within the minimum service standard (≤140 minutes). Pre-analytical factors (r = 0.604; p = 0.000) and analytical factors (r = 0.545; p = 0.001) had significant effects on TAT, while post-analytical factors were not significant (r = -0.098; p = 0.595). In conclusion, pre-analytical and analytical factors are the main determinants of TAT, indicating the need to improve these stages to enhance laboratory service quality.

Abstract

Introduction : Butterfly pea flower (Clitoria ternatea L.) is one of the most commonly found plants.  Butterfly pea flowers contain anthocyanins which are abundant in the flowers and play a role in giving red, violet-blue color to the flowers. Anthocyanins are the main molecules of plant colorants. The potential of anthocyanins in butterfly pea flowers can be used as a natural coloring reagent. Objective : The purpose of this study was to determine whether telang flower extract can be used as a substitute for gentian violet in Gram staining. Method : The research method used is experimental. Result : The results of Gram staining research using original pH butterfly pea flower extract at concentrations of 1:10, 2:10, 3:10, 4:10, and pH 5 butterfly pea flower extract at concentrations of 1:10, 2:10, 3:10, 4:10, 5:10 on Staphylococcus aureus bacteria showed poor bacterial staining results because the bacteria were not purple while the original pH butterfly pea flower extract at a concentration of 5:10 showed good staining results because the bacteria were purple. While in Escherichia coli bacteria, butterfly pea flower extract shows good staining results because the bacteria are red. Conclusion : Data analysis using the Kruskal Wallis test obtained Asymp. Sig (0.000) <0.05, it can be concluded that there is a significant difference in Gram staining using gentian violet and telang flower extract with variations in pH and composition as a substitute for gentian violet.

Abstract

Infections caused by the Hepatitis B virus and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) remain major global public health concerns, particularly among pregnant women who are at high risk of transmitting infections to their infants through vertical transmission. Transmission may occur during the intrauterine, intrapartum, or postpartum periods. Screening for Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and HIV is an essential component of integrated antenatal care aimed at preventing mother-to-child transmission. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between HIV and HBsAg examination results among second trimester pregnant women at Tanjung Haloban Community Health Center. This study employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 25 respondents were selected using a total sampling technique. Data were obtained from laboratory examination results and analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis with the Chi-Square test at a significance level of 0.05. The results showed that 88% of respondents had non-reactive HIV results and 80% had non-reactive HBsAg results. Bivariate analysis indicated a statistically significant relationship between HIV and HBsAg examination results (p = 0.02 < 0.05). In conclusion, although the majority of pregnant women were not infected, there were still reactive cases that may contribute to vertical transmission, and a significant association between the two infections suggests the possibility of co-infection. Therefore, strengthening routine screening, improving health education, and optimizing prevention programs are necessary.

Abstract

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Hepatitis B remain major public health concerns, particularly among pregnant women, due to the risk of mother-to-child transmission during pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. Limited knowledge among pregnant women regarding the importance of HIV and Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg) screening may hinder early detection and the prevention of vertical transmission. This Community Service Program aimed to improve the knowledge and understanding of second-trimester pregnant women regarding the importance of HIV and HBsAg screening during pregnancy. The activity was conducted on April 18, 2026, at Grandmed Hospital, Lubuk Pakam, involving 25 second-trimester pregnant women. The program employed a one-group pre-test–post-test design through educational lectures, interactive discussions, question-and-answer sessions, and educational media. The educational materials covered the definition of HIV and Hepatitis B, modes of transmission, risk factors, the impact of infection on mothers and fetuses, and the importance of HIV and HBsAg screening as part of integrated antenatal care. The evaluation results showed that the participants' mean knowledge score increased from 58.4 in the pre-test to 87.6 in the post-test, representing an improvement of 29.2 points (49.9%). In addition, 96% of participants understood the benefits of HIV and HBsAg screening after participating in the educational program. The activity also increased participants' awareness of utilizing screening services available at healthcare facilities. Therefore, health education serves as an effective promotive strategy to support the prevention of HIV and Hepatitis B transmission while improving maternal and child health.
