Abstract

The shift in meaning and the formation of new terms in Arabic on social media and chat applications represent an important linguistic phenomenon in this digital age. This study aims to analyze how Arabic words undergo shifts in meaning and how new terms are formed through interactions on digital platforms. Using a literature review method, this research examines scholarly articles, books, and digital conversations from various sources such as WhatsApp and Instagram. The results show that communication via social media has driven changes in the meaning of everyday words, as well as the emergence of new terms often influenced by social, cultural, and globalization factors. Although this phenomenon enriches the Arabic language with new, more flexible, and expressive variations, there are also challenges in understanding word meanings, especially among generations not accustomed to digital language. The study concludes that the Arabic language in cyberspace continues to evolve in response to the demands of the times, although these changes may create difficulties in communication between generations. Further research is recommended to explore the impact of these changes on the structure of formal language and Arab cultural identity.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of masrahiyyah activities on the critical thinking and Arabic speaking (kalam) skills of students in the Arabic Language Education Department (PBA) at UIN Malang. As a drama-based instructional method, masrahiyyah engages students in scriptwriting and role-playing, thereby enhancing both linguistic and cognitive skills. This research employed a quantitative approach using a correlational survey method. Data were collected from 42 respondents consisting of students and alumni of the PBA program at UIN Malang who participated in masrahiyyah, through an online questionnaire. The data were analyzed using SPSS, including tests of validity, reliability, and multiple linear regression analysis. The findings indicate that masrahiyyah has a significant positive impact on both speaking (kalam) ability and critical thinking. However, the influence on speaking skills is greater than that on critical thinking. This study highlights masrahiyyah as an effective strategy for promoting communicative and analytical competence in Arabic language learning.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of code-switching and code-mixing in the communication of graduate students in Arabic Language Education (PBA) at the multicultural environment of UIN Malang. The main issue addressed in this research is how code-switching and code-mixing are used in both social and academic interactions by students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. The aim of this study is to understand the impact of code-switching and code-mixing on academic communication and the social identity of students in a multicultural campus environment. The study employs a qualitative approach, with data analysis based on interviews and observations of students, as well as an analysis of conversations in WhatsApp group chats. The findings reveal that students frequently use code-switching and code-mixing to adapt to their interlocutors, facilitate communication, and enrich their vocabulary. Code-switching plays a role in strengthening the students' social identity and fostering inclusive social relationships. However, code-switching can also hinder the understanding of academic content if not used appropriately. This study concludes that code-switching and code-mixing are essential communication strategies in a multicultural academic environment, but their use must be directed and contextually appropriate.
