Abstract

The government provides subsidized single-story housing for low and middle-income communities. However, these houses often undergo major renovations due to residents is comfort with the housing quality. Buildings that adopt a passive design approach have the potential to enhance comfort and environmental friendliness as a sustainable and future oriented investment. Therefore, passive design is essential for achieving sustainable renovations of subsidized housing. This study focuses on three subsidized housing projects in Medan City. The research employs qualitative and quantitative approaches, collecting data through three stages: literature review, expert interviews, and field observations, including questionnaire distribution to residents of single-story subsidized housing in Medan. A Likert scale is used to assess residents needs, while a ranking system prioritizes the most efficient passive design factors for renovation. The study identifies five key passive design factors that can optimize subsidized housing: vegetation, materials, ventilation, shading, and interior layout. The findings serve as a guideline for homeowners, developers, and policymakers to construct or renovate more sustainable subsidized single-story housing.

Abstract

A house is a basic need that ideally fulfills the aspects of comfort, health, and safety. However, subsidized houses that are built still have constraints in terms of space limitations and material specifications. So it often cannot optimally accommodate the needs of residents. This research aims to identify factors influencing residents' decisions to renovate subsidized houses in Sleman Regency, with case studies of Godean Jogja Hills and Griya Moyudan Asri housing. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach through closed questions and semi-structured interviews. The results showed that space requirements were the main factor driving renovations at 56.97%, followed by comfort reasons and perceptions of insufficient house area. The types of space most added include kitchens and terraces. This research contributes to understanding the dynamics of residents' adaptation to the limitations of the initial design of subsidized houses. It was found that developers and the government need to be considered in designing subsidized housing, which is more flexible, sustainable, and meets the long-term needs of low-income communities.

Abstract

Abstract: Kampung Mojo is one of the settlements in Surakarta City where the KOTAKU (City Without Slums) program is implemented. This initiative aims to improve the quality of basic infrastructure in slum areas, thereby reducing slum conditions. The program has redesigned the settlements by clear boundaries within residential areas, including the organization of residential layouts, plot arrangements, street spaces, and open spaces. During observations in September 2023, a notable phenomenon emerged regarding how residents use the outdoor spaces of their houses, such as alleys, streets, and leftover land, to accommodate personal and social activities. This research aims to identify the forms and patterns of territorial expansion within residential areas, providing valuable insights for future space management in Kampung Mojo following infrastructure upgrades. The study employs a qualitative approach, with primary data collected through direct observation and interviews at the research site, followed by descriptive analysis. Findings indicate that territorial expansion is a response to the limited available space, where residents utilize surrounding spaces to meet personal needs and create spaces for social gatherings. Keywords: Expansion, Settlements, Post Upgrading Abstrak: Kampung Mojo adalah salah satu kawasan lokasi penanganan KOTAKU (Kota Tanpa Kumuh) di Kota Surakarta. Abstract

Abstract: Biophilic design is a concept aimed at reintegrating the presence of nature into building environments, allowing users to reconnect with their natural surroundings. By incorporating natural elements and materials within the building, biophilic design offers a solution to help users feel closer to nature. Given the contemporary lifestyle, society has gradually distanced itself from healthy environments and natural building designs. The case study focuses on a café building in Yogyakarta, aiming to identify biophilic applications in green building design. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method and explores relevant literature on biophilic design. The study emphasizes the significant role of biophilic design principles in green buildings and examines the building’s natural connections. Based on the identification of 14 biophilic principles across both case studies, the use of natural materials, openings, and vegetation within the building shows positive effects, enabling users to feel reconnected with nature.
